" whom it may concern:
I ln'iown. that l, James '1. Scrotum, a
oil the United States, residing at. ilphin, in the county of lhiiadi-ilphia l. innsylvanhi, have invented inl improvements in hlicroin- L ltJi'lL'S of which the folli'iwing is ition.
niwintioo. relates to a gaging tool,, and ly to the (JlZLSL? ot micrometer piiina ,bject of the invention is n of a device ot thin charm-tor liich micrornzopic lengths and angles he accuinlely nuiasurrd tor the con l we of die makers, plane setters and "hers.
urr objectoil the invention is the non of a device of this cha11actcr in n,- blocl z thereof may be acouc i and looked; in adjusted poniivhereby the desired microscopic or angles may be obtained.
object of the invention is the a dtwice of this charanter which i I, o! coinitruction, thoroughly rcliat in operation, and inexpenlzllllllll'fi.

hi i 1.3 an end elevation of the guide coll. 'n the adj atint screw. Fig. 125 IS a 1 side llltiT/tlbltfli ot the bindizw screw detached ot' the said channel 9 is cut into to prov inwardly extending arcuate shaped parallel Egrooves .LI forming therehetwcen a central 'wcbrl, the same being provided Wlil1 an shoulder the channel 9 of the base from the body of the device. Fig. M is an end view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corrcrspong linp' parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
llellerringg to the drawings by 1nunorals,- the ire comprises a triangular-shaped base ii, preferably conslrluzted from metal provided with a llat bottom edge ii, a forivardly inclined top edge 7, and a rear inwardly arched edge :3, the inclined top edge 7 bring prov idcd with a channel the same being coextensive therewith and opening through opposite ends thereof to provide spacei'l parallel guide tracks 10, and the base ido almtnient shoulder 13 spaced from the onatller end ot the base, for a purpose as will be heroinattcr more fully described.
The inner lace-2e of the tracks are pro" vided with dove'lail shaped guide or run' ways 1-1, in which slidably fits a correspondingly shaped rib 15 of a movable micrometer block Ll}, the game being formed in its top face with steps 17 and 18, respectively, the planes ol. which being parallel to the bottom edge (S- of the base. Formed on and at a point intermediate the ends of the rib 1.5 is a split lug 19, provided with an internally threaded eye 20', in which is engaged an adjostling screw 21.,wthe snare being disposed in the channel 9 formed in the base 5, the rib if being provided with a semi-circular shaped groove 22 adapted .to receive one-half of the diameter of the screw when engaged in the lug 19, whereby the block 16 may be easily adjusted u )011 the traclm 10 at the inclined edge 7 o the base. This split lug l!) of the movable block it is )rovided with a binding screw E33 disposed transversely therein and is designed to tighten the lug about the adjusting screw 21, when desired.
The adjusting screw 21, at one end rcdnced to form a handle extension or stem 3 i, and at the inner end thereof an annular 25, the handle extension or stem atably engaged in a centering llich is rcinovably secured in at the rear end thereof, the said collar being held in place by means of screw members 27 passed Qttbeing rot collar 26, w
through opposite sides of the base and en-.
and extending throughthe central web l2 16 in adjusted position thereon.
the movable block 16 is positioned at the prising a triangular-shaped base having a in the channel 9 thereof are reinforcing screws 29, the latter being disposed transversely and extend through opposite faces Also threaded in the base of the base. transversely thereof at a point intermediate the reinforcing screws 29 is a binding screw 30 provided with a winged head 31, and is adapted to inwardly displace the parallel tracks 10 for clamping the movable block smaller end of the base 5, so that its-lug will abut against the shoulder 13 formed in the central. web 12in the base 5, so that the steps 17 and 18 on the block will be in a plane at the lowest parallel point of adjustment thereof.
Provided in one side face of the base 5, contiguous to the top edge 7 thereof, is a graduated scale 32, the same being cooperative with a pointer mark 33 provided in the side face of the movable block 16, whereby on adjustment of the latter, the degree of movement of the same may be ascertained by the said scale 82 for the convenience of the operator of the device.
In the steps 17 and 18 of the movable block 16 are formed internally threaded sockets 3 1, each of which is adapted to-detachably receive a vertical post, comprising a plurality of cylindrical shaped sections 35, the same being of uniform cross sectional diameter with respect to each other, and the outer surface thereof are provided with knurled portions an, whereby the said sections may be turned for connecting the same or the detachment of one from the other. Each section of the post is provided at one end with a reduced threaded lug 37 adapted for engagement within a socket 38 formed in the ai'ljaccnt end of the section, contiguous thereto. Thus when the sections 35 of the post are joined together, the said post is designed to determine the height of the work. It is seen that the length of the post may be increased or decreased if desired. Also, this post is capable Normally, l
noaonre be ascertained. The turning knob 28 is provided with an outer knurled surface 42 which enables the hand of the operator to firmlygrip the same for the turning of the adjusting screw when setting the movable block 16 on the base 5 of the device.
It is seen that the microscopic angles and lengths may be ascertained by the device.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ,ings, it is thought that the construction and 5operat1on of the invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more eX- ,tended ezrplanatiomand therefore the same has been omitted' l/Vhat is claimed is: 1.
