Be it known that I, ELLEN MARY RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derry, in the county of \Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment fasteners of the hook and, e e class, and the invention resides particu arly in the construction of the hook.

The invention has for one of its objects to a novel hook which can be sewed to the garment both at the usual attaching eyes and at the bill end of the shank or body of the hook, the threads at the latter point being protected from the wearing action of the eye engaged with the hook.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved spring'tongue associated with the bill of the hook for retaining the eye engaged with the latter.

Withthese objects in view, and others as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of arts which will be more fully described iiereinaiter and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.

In the-accompanying drawing, which illustrates, one embodiment of the invention Fi red, is a perspective view of the hook an eye, a portion of the eye being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tongue portion of the hook together with the thread protecting eye.

The hook is made .of a single iece of metal and bent into proper she e or forming the attaching eyes 1, the side members 2 of the shank, the bill members 3, and thetenlirai shank member 4 which has the end adjacent; the root or bend of the bill formed into a coil 5 disposed within the bill and projecting from the coil isa spring tongue 6 which hes between the side members 3 of the bill and has its free extremity 7 terminating1 at the top of the bill. This tongueis bent ownwardly toward the shank ofthe hook and lies over to the bending the tongue, the hump 8 is provided that effectively retains the eye B of the fastening engaged under the bill. The coil 5 constitutes an attaching eye through which the threads pass that secure the bill end of the hook on" the fabric or garment, it being,

of course, understood that the hook will be attached by the eye 1 in the usual manner by threads. The eye B when locked in the hook is prevented from bearing on the threads attaching the bill end of the hook, because the coil prevents the eye B from extending to the root or bend of the bill. The coil also adds to the resiliency of the spring tongue 6. It will thus be seen that two functions are performed by the coil 5 in that it serves as an attaching eye and protector for the threads that secure the bill end of the hook garment and increases the resiliency of the spring tongue.

From the foregoing connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will bereadil apparent to those skilled in the art to WlliCJ the invent-ion relates, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the article which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that description taken in the article shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An article of the class described comprising a hook made of a single length of wire bent into a shank consistingof twp side members, and a central member allstraight and disposed parallel, an .eye at the end of one side member, an eye between the end of the other side member and central member,
