Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT UFFTCE,
HOWARD S. HIGDON, OF JAY, FLORIDA.
GATE-LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Howann S. HIonoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jay, in the county of Santa Rosa and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gate latches and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawing in which I have shown a side elevation illustrating the application of my invention, a part of the device being shown in section.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a gate adapted to be hinged at one end, only the free swinging end of the gate being illustrated in the drawing.
13 is a post having a keeper C with an inclined projecting portion D against which the end of a longitudinally movable latch E, as it contacts, s caused to be moved longitudinally against the tension of the spring F, a suitable recess in said projecting portion being adapted to receive the end of the latch after it has passed by said inclined part. The la ch is provided with a longitudinal slot- H and adapted to receive a pin K which is carried by the plate N, said pin serving to guide the latch in its longitudinal movements. The spring F is mounted upon a contracted portion F of the latch and bears intermediate the end of a recess formed in said plate N and a shoulder I upon the latch. Said plate N is held to the bars L of the gate by means of the Specification of Letters Patent.

curved clamping members M, each of which has a threaded shank portion engaged by a nut M. By the provision of said clamping means, the plate may be held in proper adjusted position as may be desired upon gates of different sizes. Said plate is provided with groove 0 formed with the opposite walls inclined as at Q, which walls terminate in an apex Q. An operating lever S is pivotally mounted upon a pm S carried by the latch and the shank portion of the lever extends through a slot or recess 0. Said apexes Q, serve as tulcrums against which the lever is adapted to be tulcrumed to move the latch longitudinally in opposite directions, it being understood that, when the spring is utilized, there would be no need of actuating the lever for manually closing the latch. In the event oil? it being desired to reverse the plate for any purpose, the lever may be made to pass through the recess 0 and in either adjustment of the lever it is adapted to be held within the recess by means of a strip T which. is held by bolts T to said plate.
Vhat I claim to be new is 1. A gate latch comprising, in combination with a gate, a keeper for attachment to the gate post, a plate, means for holding the same to the gate, a longitudinally movable latch mounted upon the plate, the latter having a recess, a lever pivoted to the latch and passing through said recess, each opposite inclined wall of the recess tapering to an apex against which one or the other edges of the lever is adapted to :t'ulcrum, as set forth.
2. A gate latch comprising, in combination with a gate, a keeper for attachment to the gate post, a plate, means for holding the same to the gate, a longitudinally movable latch mounted upon the plate, the latter having a recess, a lever pivoted to the latch and passing through said recess, each opposite iinclined wall oil: the recess tapering to an apex against which one or the other edges of the lever is adapted to fulcrum, and means for holding the lever in said recess, as set forth.
3. A gate latch comprising, in combination with a gate and post, a keeper upon the T. W. HINE.
