Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Stb all lwhom it may concern:
Alle it known that LGEonens C. CosMorien residing at Bucharest., Roumanie, haye invented new and use-ful In'iprovements in tx'le--lloxes for Railroad-Cars, of which ^the tollowing'g is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to an axle box for railroad ears and is intended to enable always pure oil to be fed to the journal running' in the axle box at each revolution andA elmmbers receiving' the dri i oil, while be-` tween the lid and the partitions of the bearin;1 box a lubricating ring which is secured aejainst axial displacement is mounted on the journal. This ring takes the oil `From the eolleetiug chamber, which oil is scraped ntll the highest point of the lubricating ring by means of a scraper bearing strongly against the ring, and reconveyed to the upper oil ii-hamber.4
rtwo Vforms of construction ot' the object et the invention are shown in the accompanying; dra wings, in which Figure l is a vertical; and Fig. 2, a hori ',contal longitudinal ser-tion of the first form ot romtruetion of the axle box; Fig. 3 shows sections on the lines Afm-ll and C-D of Vig. 1: liigr. t is a vertical longitudinal seetiou ot! the second lorm ol2 construction; and itin. 3 bows cross sections of the lsame on the lines llt-lf and tlll ot Fig. 4;.
The bearing box l. which is made in one piecej is diiided in its lower part by partitions if, Il and l-. into chambers 5, t), 7 and 8. The partitions Il and =l are provided willi apertures l), l and '11 through which i the oil muy be conveyed to the chambers 7 and A. lubricating ring l-l is mounted en the shoulder l2 ot the axle journal 15h which lubricating ring is revolved by means ot catches on the axle, but it is not displaceahle longitudinally to the axle. 'lhe lubrieating ring projects into the chamber S and revolves between the cover 15 and the side walls .t6 and 17 ot the bearing,r box. whereby a lateral joint is lorrned and simultaneously lateral movement is prevented. By the use `t the ring any churning of the oil is also ayouled, The oil litted 'by the lubricating l yring 1-1- is removed hy lthe scraper 1l) and 'conveyed into the chamber 21 `'mclosed by the bearing box and the bearing plate Q0. The scraper 19 is guided between ribs QQ Land pressed by a spiral spring Q3 onto the llubricatiug ring. rishoulder or tread 18 yprovided on the lulu-matingring prevents the oil running otl" toward the cover 15. Lubricating passages 211 lead to the journal from the chamber 21..
As will be observed from the drawing, the lubricating ringr tft tits tightly between the side cover l5 of the axle box and the side Vall 16 formingl a part ol. the cover of the ehatnber 8, so as to 'term with the same a completely closed cover tor said chamber.
In order to prevent losses of the lubricant and penetration ol dust into tl i axle box, a packing or washer rinc,T and leather disks Qt and 27 are arranged on the axle box so as to bear on the journal, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Dust particles which may i have reached the axle box over the packingr lring,r ar anged between the axle and its journal` as shown, are prevented by thev leather disks 26 and 27llroin penetratingr liuto the oil chambers and are deposited in the chamber 5, from which they may be easily removed through an opening); 98. The axle box is filled through the aperture QD (Fig. Il i The action ol the arrangement hereiubet'ore described is asitollows:--'l`he lubricating ring- 14 on the rotation ot the axle lifts the oil trom the chamber tl upward into the chaniber 2.1 from whence it is supplied to the journal:through thelulu'ieatiuer passage-i 24. The oil again dripping otl' the journal is tirst collected in the chambers t5 and 7. 'lhe impurities and particles of metal which are mixed with the oil by the wearing away ot the bearing cups, accumulate ou the bottom ol the chamber 7 and may be drawn ott through the plug 30 which t'or this object is provided with a perforation 3l. The clean elarilied oil flows through the apertures l'l into the chamber 8 which is tightly closed opposite the journal 13, and is trom here conveyed afresh to the journal. lThe plug 32 which is also provided with a perforation serves For removing the oil t'rom the chamber S when the axle box is cleaned.
The object of the modification shown in the second torni ot construction, is to en ablel the purifying ol the oitto he more lll lill
