Letters-Patent No. l04,()46, dated June 7,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SOCKET-PIPE MACHINERY.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same I, FREDERICK M. MATTICE, of the city of Cleve` land, county of Cluyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Socket-pipo Machinery, of which the following is a i'ull description, reference being had to tho accompanying drawing and to the letters olf reference marked thereon, in which drawing- Figure lis a perspective view of the deviccJ with the several parts in position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view ol' the same with the carriage in a vertical position, and showing the position of a pipe after it is made and previous to its rcmoval for drying.

The object of niy invention relates to the ibrnuug of the sockets upon the ends of draining-pipes ot' clay, for the purpose oi uniting them, and the apparatus by which said sockets are formed, to an apparatus used for conveying said pipes away from the dies .withont ilu ury, and to a convenient and secure apparat-us for removing said pipes to the drying-ground; and
, It consists in the arrangement of thc devices employed in making the socket, consisting of a ling upon the die-plate, a core attached to a .drying-board, and a movable outside ring for shaping the socket ina .movable carriage, capable of heilig tilted up and y A represents a die-plate ofsuitable1natcrial,formiug the front of the clay-chest above referred to, which plate has an opening, P, of proper size for thc diameter of the pipe desired, having a suitable core in its center, held in position by one or more pins.
Around the periphery of this opening is a rin g, I l, which may be cast with thel plate or secured thereto in any suitable manner. l
The inner sides of this ring. are beveled inwardly with a concave curve; the face of the ring is flat, par allel with the vertical plane of the dic-plate, and of a width equal to the thickness of the pipe desired, and the line of the outer periphery is at right angles with the vertical 'plane of the dic-plate.

A lever E, composed ot' two legs standingl at right angles, is p1votedat their point oi' junction, to suitable bearings, F, secured to the top center of the dieboard A, directly over the center of the pipe-opening, so that a downward forward pressure upon the upper leg of thc lever would bring its lower leg down over the center of said opening.
A carriage, G, provided with an endless belt, J, running over suitable rollers, I, which rollers are hol lowed out intheir centers, traverses upon rollers journaled into the sides, H, of the frame which sup ports the carriage.
The endless belt is composed of bars ot' wood placedv in parallel lines at a little distance from each other, and the whole is covered loosely with suitable cloth. The carriage is provided upon its out-side near the center longitudinally with trunnions, K, which trip against 'suitable stops O upon the front ends of the side-pieces H of the frame, so that the carriage, when run forward, may be tipped up and stand iu a vertical position. Any proper pin, connected by a vcord attached to the side-piece H, may be inserted 1in a hole on the top of said side-piece, in front of the trunnion K, so as to keep said carriage in position upon said frame.
The operation of this device is as` follows, viz:
The pipe being forced ont through the opening in the die-plate A, and its front properly squared otf, and the ring B b eing attachedv by its plus' to the drying-board U, with the core l) upon it, the smaller part of the core is` placed within the i'ont opening ci' the pipe, the lever E is pressed down upon the A outside of the dryingboard O, and the core D, is
pressed into the end ofthe pipe, forming a socket upon it. AThe lever is then releasedy and the pipe forced out through the opening adesired distance, the edge of the drying-board and the ring B resting upon the endlessbelt, and moving forward with it, until the pipe has issued lthe distance desired for its length, when itis cut olf close to the die-plate. The pipe' thus formed is pushed forward a little, until the trunnion K of the carriage strikes the stops, O, when the carriage is turned np, which permits the pipe, then standing in a vertical position, to stand upon the drying-board, which in turn rests upon the ground or upon a platform. The pipeis then removed to the dryingground, the ring B is, taken oi, and the pipe suffered to remain until suticiently hardened topreserve its form when the core and drying-board may be taken away. v
.'lhe advantages of these devices are obvious, when the size, weight, and fragility of the pipes, and the necessity of nicety in construction and care in handling are considered. v
Having thus fully set fort-h the nature and merits of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of' the drying-board C, provided 2.- lhe carriage G, provided with the. endless belt J and with the trunnious K, in combination with the frame H provided with the rollers I, when constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth.
3. The combination of the ring B, provided with ears a having pins attached to them, and the drying board C having the core D attached to it, when arranged for the purpose of retaining Ithe pipe-'socket in sha-pe and preserving the same from injury.
