VETERINARY. INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8,1912.
Application filed February 12, 1912. Serial No. 676,975.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SWINEA OLsoN, a cit-i zen of the United States, residing at Amboy, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Veterinary Instrument, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in veterinary or obstetrical instruments.
The object of the invention is to aid the operation of veterinary parturition, particularly in delivering sows of their young, while it is serviceable for a like purpose in connection with other animals.
A further object is to greatly simplify the aforesaid operation and to effect carrying out the same with the minimum inconvenience and distress to the animal, and to readily accommodate the application of the device to the position of the young, whether regular or irregular, or other contingencies. A still further object is to provide for performing the aforesaid objects in an expeditio-us and effective manner.
The invention consists of slender members adapted to pivot one upon the other, and a lasso-like flexible member carried by said members, and under the control of the op erator for manipulating the same, through the assistance of said members, in securing a hold upon the object or young with the view of its delivery or extraction.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications as to the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the device in operative position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view disclosing more fully the latter position of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line w-w of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I employ two metal members 1 and 2, the same being quite slender and having threaded through apertures or eyes 3 and 4: therein respec' tively, a flexible or string member 5, secured or knot-ted at one end against casual escape from the eye 3, at the extreme forward end of the member 1. The member 2 has its forward end extending a short distance, as at i 6, beyond its eye at for entering the vaginal passage of the animal and carrying the loop formed in the string or flexible member 5 and passing the loop around the young, said forward end portion 6 being suitably rounded for obvious reasons.
The member 1 has suitably pivoted thereto near its rear end a coupling bar or latch 7 itself havinga stud or projection 8 adapted to be received by an aperture or passage 9 formed in the member 2, near the corresponding end thereof, for effecting, as indicated, the coupling together of said members 1 and 2 and to provide for the suitable relative movement and guidance thereof in manipulation of the device, in introducing or inserting the member 2 with the 100 of the string or flexible member 5, as wil be readily appreciated by those familiar with this class of devices.
It will be noted that, with the member 2 suitably grasped and held by one hand of the operator, in alinement wlth the axis of the vaginal passage, and the other member 1 grasped and manipulated by the other hand, with respect to the member 2, a loop 10 may be formed in the string 5 and that, by suitably introducing the forward end portion 6 of the member 2, together with said loop into the vaginal passage and so as to effect passing the loop over the head of the young, the required hold may be obtained thereon, by suitably actuating the string, for effecting the delivery. These ma nipulations may all be performed, it is apparent, without any appreciable distress or discomfort to the mother-animal, while the oung is readily reached and delivered without liability of injury, whether it be in regular or irregular position during the parturition operation.
WVhat is claimed is:
A device of the type described, including members having eyes therein, one of said members having a forwardly projecting portion beyond its eye, one of said members the head of having a coupling member pivoted thereto as my own, I have hereto alfixed my signaand gdapted to be iengalged With the other ture in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
meln er and a feXib e member passed through said eyes, one end of said flexible SWINEA OLSON member being-held to one of the first-re- Witnesses: ferred to members. C. D. OTT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing THOMAS LEROY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
