Application filed December 31, 1910. Serial No. 600,244.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longtown, in the county of Perry and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for removably attaching rocking log carriages or cradles to the frame work of sawing machines.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a brace member having a plurality of openings, any one of which being adapted to receive the axle or trunnion of the log carriage or cradle, the said member being further provided with forked arms having their extremities hooked and adapted to engage with suitable eyes provided upon the saw frame, the device further providing an adjustable brace support as well as means for automatically swinging or rocking the cradle or carriage in one direction, the securing means being such as to permit of the longitudinal movement or adjustment of the cradle before the same is permanently secured with relation to the saw frame.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement and in which drawings,
, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement showing the same in applied position upon the frame of a portable saw carriage. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the supporting members detached. Fig. 3 is a de tail view of the clip. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the push bar.
The numeral 1 designates the body or frame of a portable carriage upon which is j ournaled a rotary saw 2. The saw 2 is connected in any suitable manner to a source'of power such as an engine, which in the present instance it is not deemed necessary to illustrate.
The rear portion of the frame 1 is provided with spaced eyes or staples 3 and 4. The staple 3 is preferably positioned upon the side rail or beam of the frame 1, while the staple 4 is connected to the rear end of the frame adjacent to or with the longitudinal beam adjacent to the beam upon which the staple 3 is positioned.
The numeral 5 designates the rear axle for the frame; the axle is of the ordinary construction and is connected with the frame in any desired or preferred manner. The numeral 6 designates what I term a clip memher, the same being secured to the rear axle 5 through the medium of a suitable threaded staple 7 the said staple having its threaded arms provided with nuts 8. If desired the clip 6 may remain a permanent part of the axle as the same is positioned beneath the frame or body 1 so as not to interfere with any of the running gear or other operating parts of the device.
The clip 6 is provided upon its lower end with a projecting car 9, this ear being formed with a perforation 10, the latter adapted to receive the hooked end 11 of one of the arms 12 of a forked brace member 13. The second arm 14 of the said member 13 has its extremity also hooked as at 15 and the said hook is adapted to engage with the staple 3 upon the side of the frame. The lower extremity of the brace member is so arranged as to lie approximately parallel to the horizontal frame 1 when the brace is positioned upon the frame and axle and this lower substantially horizontal bent portion designated by the numeral 16 is formed with a plurality of spaced openings 17.
The numeral 18 designates the brace supporting member. This member has its up per extremity hooked as at 19 and adapted to engage with the staple 4. The lower extremity of the said member 18 is also provided with a hook or inclined lip 20, the same being adapted to engage within one of the openings 17 of the ofiset member 16 of the brace. In order to retain the hook or inclined lip 20 of the support 18 upon the brace 13, I have provided the said support with a pivoted latch or locking member 21. This locking member comprises an arm having its lower end bent to form a lip 22. The lip 22 is adapted to be swung over the upper edge of the horizontal exterision 16 and into engagement with the upturned lip or hook 20 of the member 18, thus securely retaining'the support upon the brace and preventing the lateral and longitudinal movement thereof.

The member 29 is secured to} the base 23 through the medium of connect- .ing members 31, the latter extending 'from each \end of the member 29 andconnected} with the opposite faces of the member 23.
'In order to sustain the members 29 in;
proper spaced relation with each other, I "have provided a pairof spaced longitudi-f nally extending rods or brace members 32 and 33. These rods are secured to each of :the faces of the "members 29., so as to pro-f vide a simple, strong and efficient carriage for supporting the logs.
The upper portion of the clip 6 is pro-Z vided with an opening 34:, and slidably tudinally extending rod 35. The opposite end of this .rod 35 is loosely connected with one of the members 29 of the .log carriage The rod 35 is formed with an' mounted within the said opening is a longiadjustable stop 36, and positioned between the said stop and .the clip 6 is a helical spring 37 the latter exerting a pressure.be-

said brace member being provided with an angular forked portion, means for loosely securing thesaid forks upon the saw frame, a brace support having one of its ends loosely connected with the saw frame and arranged at an angle to the brace, said support engaging with one of the openings of the brace, and a latch member for-securing the 'brace'support upon the brace.
