Be it known that I, Gnonen W. MAsKREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow River, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Load-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention provides a device whereby logs, boxes and packages generally may be handled with comparative ease both when moving the same or placing them in the desired position.

The invention consists of a bar having a handle at one end, a fulcrum at its opposite end, an intermediate grapple pivotally connected to the bar and an operating bail for manipulating the jaws or hook members of the grapple.

The invention consists of the novel features, details tion of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line :v -m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clip to which the jaws or hooks of the grapple are pivotally attached. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a modification.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

The chief element of the device consists of a bar 1 which has a handle 2 at one end and a fulcrum 3 at its opposite end, said bar being of any length depending upon the particular use for which intended. In the preferred construction the bar 1 is comparatively wide and thin and its end portions are given a one quarter twist to throw them in a plane at a right angle to the main portion of the bar. One end of the bar is formed into an eye 11 in which the handle 2 is fitted, whereas the opposite end portion is bent substantially at a right angle to form the fulcrum 3, the end of which is notched to form'prongs to bite into the box, lumber or other thing to be carried or moved.

A clip 5 is fitted upon the bar 1 and is pivoted thereto by means of a pin 6, which passes through registering openings formed of construction and combina-n in the bar 1 and in the members of the clip. The clip is preferably `in the form of a saddle and is tted upon the bar 1 so as to embrace opposite sides and extend over the top edge thereof. A pair of ears 7 are formed upon the lower end of each member of the clip and receive the upper ends of hooks or jaws 8 which are pivoted to said ears. The pivotal connection of the clip 5 with the bar 1 enables the grapple to adapt itself to the strain and load imposed thereon when the device ,is in active operation so that the jaws or hooks 8 occupy a position corresponding with the direction of force. A bail 9has its ends pivotally connected with the hooks or jaws 8 and its upper portion is provided with a handle for convenience in manipulationg the jaws or hooks 8 when applying the grapple to the article to be lifted or moved.

The device is particularly adapted for handling railway ties and logs and in this capacity one of the devices is a plied to an end of the tie or log. YVhen tie device is in o erative position the pronged ends of the ulcrum 3 engage the upper side of the tie or log and the hooks or jaws of the grapple engage opposite sides of the log, the lifting or carrying force being applied to the handle 2, a workman grasping each end of the handle so that the tie or log occupies a position between the workmen. The prongs o f the fulcrum 3 and the pointed ends of the hooks or jaws 8 bite into the tie or log and prevent slipping of the device when the same is in operation.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the fulcrum 3a comprises a sleeve 10 and a prong or claw 11, said fulcrum being adjustable upon the bar 1 and adapted to be secured in the adjusted position by means of a set screw 12 threadedinto an opening formed in a side of the sleeve 10. The clip 5 may be adjustable on the bar 1 and to admit of such adjustment the bar is formed witha number of openings 13 through any one of which the pivot pin 6 may pass.

From the foregoing escription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the prmciple of operation of the invention, together with the device which l now consider to be the embodiment thereof,
