Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Draft-Rigging for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly :to'draft rigging for railway cars, and the present application contains the subjectmatterdivided out of the application which eventuated in a Patent, No. 866,404, dated Sept. 17, 1907, and is a continuation of application, Serial No. 412,444, filed J an. 24, 1908.
l The principal object of the present invention is to provide novel and effective rigging employed in connection with the end sill covered by the patent, and having means which 'effectively absorbs all shocks and jars,
while permitting the necessary lateral movement ofthe coupler when rounding curves or. when being coupled on curves.
A further object is to provide novel mechanism of a simple nature in which both springandfr'ic'tion resistance is opposed to the movement of the coupler.

Still another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10'. The springs 31, are located above and below the shank and the horns 32 ot the' coupler head, are consequently located above and below the shank. This structure, however, operates in exactly' the same manner as the lother embodiments of the invention.
The mechanism above described, is entirely practicable with the metallic end sill, the springs are-entirely housed. and so associated, that they absorb all bulling jars and shocks. At the same time, the coupler can play ,laterally to a `limited extent in order to permit the cars to round curves and be coupled on curves without difficulty.
l-Vhat is probably the preferred form of construction is illustrated in Figs. 11, 12 and 13. The rear end of said coupler shank is located between a .pair ot' spaced center sills 38 secured to the rearwardly projecting portion 3S) of the end sill. The coupler head 40 is provided with oppositely disposed horns or extensions 41, and springs 4Q, loeatedin the socket 36, on opposite sides of the shank, to oppose the inward movement ot said horns. Interposed between these springs 4Q and the horns 41 are ,friction devices in the form of blocks 43, the .outward movements of which are,
limited by suitable bolts 44 extending across the outer end of the socket 33. 43 have recesses 45 .in their front ends, in which said bolts normally engage. The horns 41, as shown, pass between the bolts 44: .and engage the' inner portions of the .outer ends of the blocks, thus etiecting the outward swinging movements of said blocks and causing their outer faces 46 to bear against the opposite side walls LL7 of the socket. These walls, as will be evident by reference to'F ig. 12 are. located in angular relation to the longitudinal line of draft, andv are eonvcrgently disposed. Moreover the blocks 43, as shown, have rounded inner faces 4.3arranged to bear against the sides of the4 coupler shank 37 so as to rock on the .latter a's it nieves longitudinally. Instead of rounding thefaces'of the blocks 43, the opposite sides ot the coupler shank 37 may be bulged, as shown at 37a in Fig. 14., the same action being secured by either arrangement. llVith this structure therefore. when the coupler head vis forced inwardly, the horns 41, engaging the blocks. will swing the same outwardly, causing trictional engagement between said blocks and the walls The blocks equilibrium, the horns bearing against the front inner corners, the inner sides of the blocks having rocking bearings against the opposite sides of the coupler shank and the rear outer corners of said blocks operating against the inclined faces 47. This arrangement therefore produces the desired trictional resistance while precluding the possibility o the edges of the blocks 43 (ligging into the bearing faces. This movement is furthermore,resisted by the springs 42, in the same manner as in the first described embodiments. These springs 4Q also act to resist the outward swinging movements of the blocks vand return them as soon as the pressure upon them by the coupler head iS relieved.
The rear end of the shank 37 is located in a' substantially U-shaped casing 4-8 secured to and 'between the center sills 38, and is provided with a sliding plate 49 against which the front ends of other springs 50 bear. The rear ends of these springs bear against anothe.` plate 51 and this plate abuts against the trentI tace ot the body bolster 52. In order to securely prevent any lateral displacement on the part ofv the body bolster, butter brackets 53 are preferably located against the rear side of the same, being secured to the center sills by bolts 54 and having teeth shown at which are embedded in the center sills. lVith this structure therefore both spring-and trictional resistance to the inward movement of the coupler head is secured and the parts are' effectively reinforced.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will he understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construetion, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in rention.
Having thus fully described my invention` what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a structure of the character lset forth, the combination with an end sill having a socket, of a coupler having a shank slidahly passing through the socket`- and 'springs located in the socket and resisting the movement of the coupler.
