DOUBLE-KNIFE BOX FOR BEET-ROOT-SLICING- MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, MAX PAsoHnN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 18 Schillerstrasse, Kothen, Anhalt, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double- Knife Boxes for Beet-Root-Slicing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an im proved double knife box for beetroot slicing machines.
In the form of double-knife box heretofore employed and described for example in German Patent No. 85888, dated January 1, 1895, which has already lapsed, the front knife was secured by screws in such a manner as to be displaceable longitudinally beneath the fixed serrated guide-bar or web arranged opposite the rear knife and adapted to guide the beetroots between the front knife and the rear knife. This arrangement entailed numerous disadvantages. order to obviate these defects, it has been proposed to arrange the front knife between two holding plates, the upper of which is clamped by means of a cylindrically bent projection on a fixed supporting web through the guide bar for the rear knife, the adjustment of the depth of out being effected by rotating the front knife about the middle axis of the said cylindrical. projection. Apart from the disadvantage inherent in the rotatability of the front knife, this construct-ion does not avoid the necessity for the undesirable steep inclination of the front knife to an adequate adjustment and if the knife is to be sufficiently adjustable, that is to say if it is to be used until but little of it is left, would cause a very large interval between the guide bar and the supporting web of the front knife.
In the present invention the arrangement is such that the clamping plate of the front knife serving as counter-piece for the rear knife is tippable about an axis in proximity to its front edge in a manner known in connection with single knife boxes and front knife counter-pieces of double knife boxes and is provided with height adjusting means for its rear upper edge. This arrangement renders it possible to adjust the rear edge of the bearing plate in height independently relatively to the cutting edge of the rear knife without the whole of the front knife Specification of Letters Patent.

being simultaneously moved forward parallel therewith as would be the case in a construction having the middle beam displaceable vertically and parallel. If an adjusting wedge be arranged beneath the rear end ofthe bearing plate by tightening the fixing screws of the bearing plate the front knife and the adjusting wedge are simultaneously locked in position so that no special fixing means for the adjusting wedge are neces- -sarv.
So long as the fixing screws of the bearing plate are not tightened it is possible to alter the height of the cutting edge of the front knife and also of the rear edge of the bearing plate independently of each other as, desired. By means of the novel construction the adjustment and fixing is very convenient and the height of the cutting edge relatively to the counter-piece can be adjusted quite independently of each other as regard the front and rear knives.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section through the knife box. Fig. 2 is a section on the line A B in Fig. 1 viewed in the direction indicated by the arrow, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the front part of the front knife.
Instead of the front knife 4) being attached to the under side of a transverse web or bar as is usual in this class of apparatus and as shown in the'German patent before referred to, the said knife is supported upon a fixed web or abutment a-andis clamped thereon by the grooved guide-bar b of the front knife, by means of a lag screw which is in ser'ted from beneath up through the web, The knife shank is'provided with a longitudinal slot, so that the knife may be readily adjusted longitudinally on the web a. It is also adapt-ed to be readily detached, and an impo-rtant advantage is attained by making the grooved guide-bar b the clamping means. Now in order to render the upper edge of the bearing plate 6 which serves as counter-piece for the rear knife 0 adjustable in height vertically an adjusting wedge f is arranged beneath the rear end of the bearing plate I) so as to be displaceable in a corresponding groove in the supporting web a. This adjusting wedge is furnished with a handle 9 which protrudes through an opening it in the rear wall of the web Z2 so that by means of this handle the wedge f can conveniently be adjusted. If after loosening the fixing nuts 2' of the bearing plate the adjusting wedge f is moved toward the right hand for example (Fig. 2) the bearing plate 6 tilts about its front edge is in simultaneously lifting the rear upper edge Z which governs the cutting action of the rear knife 6. On tightening the nuts 2' the front knife 11 and the adjusting wedge f which have hitherto also been adjustable are clamped bythe pressure of the bearing plate I).
As will. be apparent from the foregoing explanation the adjustment in height of the rear edge Z of the bearing plate does not produce any adjustment in the height of the front edge so that there is no risk of the material being cut accumulating against this front edge It will of course be understood that the adjusting wedge f might also be arranged above the front knife 4).
l/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a double knife box for slicing machines, in combination, a supporting web, a front knife carried by said web in a fixed, slightly inclined position, a rear knife, a guide bar for said rear knife, said guide bar disposed on said front knife, and means for adjusting the edge of the guide bar adja cent the rear knife by tilting said guide bar about its opposite edge.
2. In a double knife box for slicing inachines, in combination, a supporting web, a front knife carried by said web in a fixed, slightly inclined position, a rear knife, a guide bar for said rear knife, said guide bar disposed 011 said front knife, and a wedge disposed below the rear edge of said guide bar, to raise said edge.

In a double knife box for slicing machines, in combination, a supporting web, a front knife carried by said web in a fixed, slightly inclined position, a rear knife, a guide bar for said rear knife, said guide bar disposed on said frontknife, a wedge dis- ,posed below the rear edge of said guide bar, to raise said edge, and means fastening said web, front knife and guide bar in adjusted position. i 4. In a double knife box for slicing machines, in combination, a supporting web, a front knife carried by said web, displaceable longitudinally with reference to said web, a rear knife, a guide bar for said rear knife, said guide bar disposed on said front knife, and a wedge disposed below the rear edge of said guide bar to raise said edge.
