T. JOHNSON. BOND FOR-BEAMS FORMED 0F PLASTIC MATERIAL.

THEODORE JOHNSON, OF CHIQGO, ILLINOIS.
BOND FOR BEAMS FORMED OF PLASTIC MATERIAL.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
Application filed March 23, 1912. Serial No. 685,799.
' T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE JOHNSON,
a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bonds for Beams Formed of Plastic Material, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to concrete construction, and more specifically to improvements in bonds for uniting adjacent beams ofconcrete or other plastic material.
The object of my invention is the production of a beam of concrete or other plastic material which will be so constructed that, when a plurality of beams are arranged side by side, co-mpartments will be formed extending between adjacent beams for the reception of bonds for securely uniting said beams. Other objects will appear hereinafter. With these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangeclaimed. I
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plurality of beams arranged side by side or in position for use, said beams being of a construction embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary top-plan view of the central portion of two adjacentbeains or of the portion in which the bond is formed, and Fig. 3 is a transversesection taken on line a: of Fig.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a beam 1 which is formed ofconcrete or other suitable plastic material. The beam 1 is of, I construction and the same is reinforced at 2 in the conventional manner. The beam 1 is formed in its opposite sides mediallyof the extremities thereof with laterally open- 'ing pockets 3 which taper inwardly, said as will be readily understood. With this I provision it will be seen that, when two beams are placed side by side, as shown in Fig. 1, the pockets 3-will register with each other so as to form a compartment-or chamj ber for the reception of a bond. The bond,
which is shown at 5, isformed of plastic material, this material being introduced to the chamber formed by the pockets 3 through an opening, which is formed be tween the contiguous surfaces or edges of the adjacent beams, by providing recesses 6,
in the outer edges of the upper walls of the pockets 3, the recesses 6 registering with each other when the beams are properly ar-' ranged side by side, as clearly shown in the several views. a j
With the. construction set forth, it will be seen that adjacent beams will be securely locked together, and-so that the structure or floor formed thereby will possess practically the same strength and durability as though the same were formed of a single piece of plastic material. The constructionissuch that the formation of bonds therein ma be eflfected with great ease and expedition, and the beams may be molded without any more labor than is required in the formation of a" beam of similar construction but. with out pockets formed in the adateral edges thereof for the receptionof the bonds as in this case.
While I have illustrated and -described the preferred formof construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capadesire to; avail myself offsuch variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
.Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1." A plurality of beams, each beam hav .ing a pocket in each side thereof, the pockets of all ofsaidbeams being in alineinent; and a plastic bond inserted in each of said pockets.
"2: A plurality of bea1ns, each' beam ha ing a pocketin each side thereof, the'peckets In testimony whereof I have signed my of all of said beams being in aiinement, and name to this specification in the presence of the'pockets of the adjacent surfaces of said two subscribing Witnesses. beams registering and opening into each THEODORE JOHNSON. 5 other; and a plastic bond inserted in each Witnesses:
