EGG- MARKER AND DATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherlock, in the county of Thurston and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Markers and Daters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lating stamps; and has for its object the provision of a hand-stamp of the type set forth that is simple in construction, and con venient and durable in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means whereby the printing line of selected type will be secured in a positive manner in alined printing position.
A still further object of the invention is the adaptation of the device for the purpose of an improved egg-marker by the combination with said line of selective type of the )rovision of a fixed rubber stamp in alinement therewith to indicate, preferably, the origin of the goods.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of a dating stamp for the purposes as aforesaid and will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed,
In the drawings, accompanying this applicat-ion, Figure 1 is an end view of an embodiment of the invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View. Fig. at is a detail view of the type wheels and easing cover when disassembled from the stamp casing.
Referring to said drawing, the reference numeral 1 designates a cylindrical casing, whose peripheral wall is flattened at 2 and provided thereat with a transverse slot 3. One end of said casing is desirably formed with an integral end wall 4 while spaced interiorly therefrom the casing is provided with a partition 5 between which and the opposite open end of the casing is formed an open chamber 6. On the upper inner surface of the casing within said chamber is a pair of spaced ridges 7 affording a trans verse space 8 therebet-ween, desirably directly opposite said slot 8.- A spindle 9 is fixedly mounted at one extremity 10 in said end wall protruding axially of the casing through said partition and terminates exteriorly of the open end of the casing in a Specification of Letters Patent.

12 designates a plurality of wheels mounted for independent rotary movements upon a tubular axle 13 each having a number of radially directed teeth 14. One end of said axle is flanged as at 15 and the opposite end is provided with a peripheral groove 16. A cover 17 for the open end of the casing is provided with a rim 18 for sliding engagement with the casing and a centrally disposed aperture which is received within said groove 16, and the outer flange 19 of the axle, being formed thereover, secures the wheels and easing upon said axle enabling the same to be entered in the casing and re moved therefrom as an operative unit. Said tubular axle is adapted to be engaged upon said spindle 9 and is secured thereon by a nut 20 upon the threaded end 11 thereof. The teeth 1 1 of said Wheels are provided with rubber or other suitable type characters, as 21, respectively designating the year, month and numerals denoting the day of the month. The flattened portion 2 ofthe casing in alinement with said slot 8 and approximating the width of the space between said partition 5 and the end wall lis provided with a fixed rubber stamp 22 which may contain suitable standing matter, as the name and address of the user.
The invention may be employed as follows :Assuming that the type wheels are removed from the casing, the wheels are ,turned so that the type designating the proper date will be in alinement. They are thus inserted within the casing so that said approved date line will be entered in the slot 3, as at A, and whereat the type protrude beyond the plane of the casing owing to the said flattened portion 2, while the other teeth are so disposed that certain of them will be in alinementand be caused to enter the space 8, as at B, which thus lock the selected type line in printing position. After the type are properly set and the cover coincidentally secured to the easing, the nut is screwed upon the threaded end of the spindle 9 to secure the cover and associated type wheels in operative condition with the casing. when it is desired to change the date line the cover and type wheels are removed from the casing whereupon the wheels may be rotated to present the desired type characters in the printing line and again replaced. This operation is very simple and may be expeditiously performed, requiring only the previous removal of the nut 20.
In marking eggs or the like to which this invention is particularly adapted, the casing is grasped by the hand of the user, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the operative date line is positioned downwardly. In this position the type may be applied to an ink ing pad and then to the goods, in the case of eggs, giving the stamp a transverse rocking motion to bring each character of the type successively in printing contact with the curved surface of the egg.
The device is especially advantageous in that the printing line is positively held at all times in rigid alineinent owing to the I provision of the ridges 10 which aiiord efficient guideways for the secureinent of the wheels in set positions.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. In a hand stamp, a cylindrical casing having an open end and flattened on one side of the periphery, said flattened portion having a transverse slot, a partition in said casing, a spindle mounted in the closed end of the casing and in said partition and extending axially of the casing through the open end of the latter, a hollow axle sleeved on said spindle having a flanged inner end and agroove near its outer end, a cover for said open end through which the spindle extends and which engages said groove, a plurality of type wheels mounted for independent rotation on said axle, means carried by the casing for holding the type wheels in adjusted position, and means engaging the spindle for securing the type wheels in the casing and the cover on the open end of the latter.
2. In a hand stamp, an open-ended cylindrical casing having a flattened portion on one side, said flattened portion having a transverse slot, a pair of inwardly-extending ridges on the inner face of the casing opposite the transverse slot, a spindle mounted in the casing, a hollow axle sleeved onto said spindle, a plurality of type wheels mounted on the axle for independent rotatable adjustment thereon and having radially disposed teeth bearing type characters, a tooth of each wheel being received in the space between said ridges whereby the wheels are held in adjusted position, a cover for the open end of said casing through which the spindle and hollow axle extends, means engaging the spindle for securing the cover to the casing and the type wheels within the casing, and a fixed rubber stamp carried by the flattened portion of the easing in line with said slot.
