Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,397, dated January 3, 1854-..
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, OREN STODDARD, of the town of Busti, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Sawing Wood; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, inaking part of this spec-ification, wherein- Figure 1, is a plan; F ig. 2, is a side elevation and Fig. 3, is a cross sectional elevation through the line A, A, Fig. 1.

Thenature of my said invention consists in so arranging machinery that when a cross cut saw has sawed through a log, the saw is raised up by a motioncommunicated from the vibration thereof, andwhen the saw is thus raised, the log is fed along, beneath the saw, the saw being supported although vibrating, and when the log has been fed along the required amount for the next cut the mo-tion of the log simultaneously disengages the feed, allowing the log to remain stationary, and removes the support beneath the saw allowing it to descend and saw 0H another section of the log or tree under operation.

The other end of the log under treatment passes over a roller cl, which is hollowed down to receive the log and provided with spikes that enter and hold onto the log so that when the roller is rotated as hereafter s et forth the log is fed along drawing with it the carriage c.
e, is the main shaft, which is p-ropelled at the required speed by competent power applied to a handle or pulley 2; on one end of the shaft e, is a crank 3, with a pitman f, to the vibrating arm g, which is hung on a center 4, and the lower end is guided by a tenon in a slot through the bar or guide 5.

On the opposite side of the arm g, to the pitman f, is a second pitman or slide z', carrying on its end the cross cut saw 7s. The slide i, passes through and is guided vertically as the saw descends, by a mortise through the post Z, and also by a guide m, or sliding gate, which slides down in grooves 6 as the saw descends, the opening through which the slide ,passes being provided with friction rollers 7,*above and below the same.
ai., is a connecting bar jointed to the arm g near its center 4, and also to aright angle gate m, drops and a projection 15, thereon taking the spring latch 12, disengages the same from theV pawl 9, allowing the saine by the vibrations of the lever to lift the gate m, by operatingo-n a rack 14, inthe face of the gate, m, which gate is sustained to each point to which it is lifted by a latch o, hereafter referred to, taking the ratchet teeth s, on the side of the gate m; and when the gate has been lifted the required amount to pass the log beneath the saw, a projection 13, on the face of the gate m, takes the pawl 9 as it descends to take another tooth on the rack, turning the pawl back till it is caught and held by the latch 12 until another cut is made across the log and the gate falls.
Having now described the means for raising the saw after a cut has been made, I proceed to describe the means for rolling the log along the length required for the next section, but it must be borne in mind that the saw Vremains elevated, the gate vbeing held up by the latch a, until that is Withdrawn, although the saw still lvibrates it does not touch the log but is above it.
16 is a rod from the horizontal arm Vof the lever o, to a lever p, on a fulcrum 17, which lever carries a pawl 18, that'when not withdrawn operates on a ratchet Wheel Q on the roller d, rotating said roller slowly by the motion communicated to the lever p.

r, is an arm on a fulcruin 21, that is depressed by a spring 22, that is sufficiently strong to overcome the spring 20 to the pawl 18, and draw said pawl back out of the teeth of the ratchet wheel q, by means of an arm 23, descending from the lever or arm 1', with, a cord or wire to the pawl. The arm r, at it-s moving end overlies the slide z'; consequent-ly when the saw is raised sufciently high to clear the log, the parts are so set as that the slide z', elevating the arm r, relieves the pawl 18, which receiving motion from the constant vibration of the lever p, rolls the log along until the end thereof comes in contact with an adjustable gage u, retained by a pin 26, in theend of a lever set on a fulcrum 24, and kept toward the l gate by a spring 25, this lever t, carries the latch o, and when the log has been forced along by the roller the distance suficient to move the lever t, and disengage thelatch fv, the gate m, drops so that the saw rests on the log, which simultaneously draws the pawl 18, back by the lever 1, allowing the pawl 19 to hold the roller d, and log in place. In this position the parts. remain unt-il the log is sawn off, the section rolling away down an incline fw, relieving the lever t, the spring of which returns the latch fu and the dropping of the gate m, disengages the hook from the latch or pawl 9, allowing that again to raise the gate and operate as before detailed.
By adjusting the slide n, different lengt-hs or sections of the log may be cut off.
I do not intend to limit myself to the sizes or proportions of the parts as these may be varied to suit the size of log to be i operated on, and the part-s ofthe frame, i
&c., may be either wood or metal, and can be so fitted as to be taken apart for transy ing the saw when it has cut through the log A by means of the `ratchet 14, p-aWl, 9, lever o, and parts attached in combination with the retaining latch fu, operated upon by the log when it has been forced forward the required amount todisengage said latch and allow the saivrto operate on t-he log as set forth.
