y Tall-whom 'Zt-may concern:
' Be it'known thatl, CHARLES D. lMo- DoNALm'a citizen of the United States, residing at- Cliicago, lin the county of @ook andl State of Illinois,- have invented certain i new and useful 'Improvements in Metal- VVCrking-Machines, of which the following isa specification'.
The present invention relates to certain 1,0. improvements adapted more particularly i for use Withautomatic die presses. i The objects of the present invention are; toprovide an arrangement whereby a variation in' the Vtiming of the delivery and discharge 4mechanisms of the' machine may be accomplished without any ditiiculty and without any material rearrangement of the operatingparts;` to provide" means for ad- 204 bar ;to provide means for limit-ing the movement of the'work into the groove in which it travels during the feeding operation, the
. same means insuring a rest for the work` during the feeding operation, and to render )2.5 said means adjustable. to enable the same to accommodate litself to work of differentwidtlis pto provide a connection bet-Ween the feed bar and the actuating mechanism therefor, which 'will separate under the force of undue. straiinivhereby the breaking or bending of any portionof the mechanism, by reascnof a (clogging or other stoppage ot the feeding operation, will not occur; and to provide means for controlling the move 35,1iicnts-ot the friction brake mechanism `for the drive shaft, whereby said brake mechanism will be applied just prior to tlie unclutching of the drive shaft vfrom the drive member and will be released just after the .4 clutchingof the drive shaft and the drive i member. The machine comprises a base 5 and a support 6 of any suitable shape and con- V struction; and suitably mounted in the frame is a drive shaft 7, which operates a die member 8 and is driven by any suitable means.' it might at this-time be stated that thegeneral type of machine here illustrated is the same as that shown and described in Patent No. @70,092, issued to Chartes D. McDonald von September 13, 1910, and the details of construction or" the portions ot the machine, other than those to which the presentinvention relates, will not be gone into.
The drive shaft 'Thas secured adj acent one eiid thereof a gear 0, which is secured to said shaft in a manner whereby it .may be readily removed and another one inserted in its place. Upon said shaft and to-A thev outside of; the gear 9 is secured aslotted dish l10,.to which is connected a. rod 11- operativeljY connected to the feed bar. rthe gear 9 meshes with a gear 12 mounted'alpenI '22% y r,e39,565

The gear in turn meshes with a rear lt suitably mounted upon a shaft and sec-tired to this shaft are a plurality of cams 1T, one ef which affiliates the, feeding meehiiinisfm, and the other of 'which natanti-is the distillati-gint; meehanisni, Said feeding and di 'arging .mcehanisinfs may in Letters Patent to and will, therefore.7 net be dencribed in detail. it is obv'i( 7 ho'wwer, that there is a relative speed relation between the drive shaft 7 and the driven shaft ll] due to the varrine )s of the ge l2 and 1G.
in th arrangement Shown in 1 of the d raivingjit. the highest.- speed of the deliver* ing meel'ianism and the discharge mechanisn'i will be ol'itained; that to 'yz the 'fewest number of revt'ilntiens ef the drive shaft will ener-ate said delivery and discharge mechanisms. if a ymailer sized gear were pet in piace of the `time Si, ehvionsly, the number of revolutions of the drive shaft, which 'would lhe`neceesary tiefere theshaft 1T a complete "rotation would be increased, and lance the timing;` of the rotation of the drive shaft 'with respect te the rotation of the shaft 1T would be changed.
ln die press Work a-chanfge in the timing of the delivery -and diehareje nxeehai'iiSms is ver)7 innertant. 'For instanee. if a lilanl( of material iS being need nnen which the die men'xber vacts six times, after the initial delivery of the work, the feeding nieehanisin must act six times and the dietineehanism act six times1 betere .the f lieharge takee place. Hence there must', he "x aetnations of the drive shaft er the shaft to one aetnation et' the haft if". however: the style of wort; is changed. andn'ork acted upon which can onlyy accommodate three operations ef the die, thenvthe Speed rele'tien or timing' between the shaft 7 and the shaft f mast berlianeed. ln the preeent eonStrnctien, .when it is desired to matie Stich a change, the gear 9, whim then in transition,
remorediainl another gear ont in its place...
The gear l?, being' Seeiired te an adjustable mounting, can be moved so as to bring its teeth inte mexh with the ljear Si). in'plaee upon the drive shaft and the gear l?.
It might be noted that thev axial center ot the erin er mounting' ifi iS the. axial center of the gearI l5; hence the teeth nf the gear i2 areconstantly in mesh with the teeth of the ffear itl, but by adjustingthe. positions of 'the arm l?, the gear 12 can he brought into mesh with the gear einen the drive Shaft7 whatever size this latter great-may be. Thus, by this constrnetion a Simple. and etl'icient. nieuns'for eh'ang'inur the timingV ef the drive Vhatl. with -reSnect te the actuation of the de :ivery and discharge mechanisms can be lar ti;- thnee @hervir above referred easily mid quicliy accomplished hy the slibstitiitien of one gear of the of gears for another.
The work is lifted from suitable table .t8 by suction enps 19, and when i '1 certain height vluy these, CnpS, a linger l0 ac# truites to force the Work into a channel 21? best illustrated in Figs. 1lanr This con- :stitntes` a delivery n'ieehanifim, which is fully described and shown in Patent No. 970,092 hereinbefore referred to, and a detailed deserin'tion thereof will net heentered into at, this time. lEhe channel 21 is shown as previded with a flaring mouth or inlet 22, and
yis further shown widened at intervals as at werk is fed into the channel Qlits movement inward l,will be arrested by this red. This is provided because .of the fact that in dealingwith short Widths of work thegtinger 2O may not force the work Clear to the lower edge of the channel, and hence` the, work `would have nol firm surface kfor the lower edge to rent on while beingrfeihand there.- fore might twist to a greaterv or lees degree. B viitilizing' the rod or bar 2i, a surface is provided gain which vthe short width work may rest.; and if a wider piece of work is beingused, the rod may heivithnlrawn frein the upperef the Semi# of enlargements and placed in the lon s: thus enabling the Wider piece ef wor-lt te enter the channel the desired distance. The rod or bar Qt in fact constitutesy the lower, wall of the channell` but. defiired, saidl har ma)y be entirely removed and. the lower Wall of the lower enlargement Serve the lower wall of the channel. t it .ly reiterrring;- 'to Ll-rnd 5. it will be Seen that a channel Q5- provided, which may be .said to extend at aiiproxiniately right ang; 1 to the channel 21, and this latter elxannel 25 genes to accommodate a feed bar 2G, bent shoivn in Figs. 3, i' and 8. The feed barv has formed ther-ehi a T-shaped or otherwise. eontignred Slot 2T, and a Seriesl of blocks 2S ire'each 'providedwith a contigiired depending portion :'29 adapted to travel in saidslet. y ln the form shown' in the drawings, the depending.portions are in the form ef a nut Q9n secured to the block by suitable fastening men'ibers 29h, and the feed bar in tnrn reciproeates in a `groove 2() of a plate 31, bestshown in Fig. (3. `Each block haS thereen a suitable ling r or feed member 33 .held normally projected npvard by a spring i lf the movement of the feed har iS increased, which can he readily aeeomplihed h v adjnstn'ient. of the. rod li in the slot of the digli l0, the lingers er feed men'ibers will have te he Set in Correspondence with this "movemenm that headset;
is, if a movement of' three I inches is given totli'e feed bar, the ends of apart.
feed bar 1s increased to five inches,
the fingers should be spaced three inches lf, however, the movement of the then the distance ,between` the fingers shoirld be increased proportionately. By arranging the bar in the manner described, this adjustment @ofthe fingers can be readily accomplished,
thus eliminating the use of several bars hav 'ing different s acings of the feed members.
It will' be rea ily understood that the adjustifient canbe made in the form shown by simply loosening the locking member 29 and sliding the' blocks necessary to-eect a proper spacing The feed bar is reciprocated by a bellcrank lever 35, the bar being connected with the lever by a suitable arm or link 36. The
end of the link is inthe form of a springlpressed clamp 37, consisting of a pivoted arm 38 held 'downward by spring pressure.
"The linlrt and the arm38 are each grooved to receive a pin 39 extending from the bellgcank lever j. The tension of the spring -is such as to exert a pressure upon the arm 38 'which Iis siitlicient to insure the retention of an engagement between the lilik and the bell' crank lever during the ordinary operation of the feed mechanism; that is, the strain, incident to the feeding of the inaf terialwwill not` be sufficient to pull the end the feeding operation,
v of the arm 38 out from 'engagement With the inf 39. lllhen undue' strain, however, is
placed ont-he feed bar, by reason of a bending of the material or other obstruction to the end ofthe arm 88 will pull away from t-lie pin fltand thus I.break the connection betweenjthe link` 3G andthe bell A"crank lever. In this manner the further actuation of the machine will not atl'ectthe feed bar, so that the stoppage ofthe feed barbyan obstruction will not result in a forcing or straining of the other parts vof the machine, as frequently happens, such` a forcing andistraining often resulting v in a breaking or bending'of the parts so as to prevent'fiiture Puse 4of the machine until proper repairs have been made.
1 In macnines of this nature, there is 'uni-' verszilly .employed means Jfor applying a 'friction bra-ke mechanism to the drive shaft to prevent rotation ofthe drive shaft after it has "been unclutched from the driving means. The obvious reason for this is to stop the movement of the operativeI portion of the machine after the nnclutching opera; tion. In machines of this nature, it has been customary to apply this friction to the drive shaft at all times. .This has been found to be objectionable, in that the resultant wear hoth to the brake mechanism and the shaft is considerable; and, furthermore, the drag resulting; from the constant application oi 65 the friction impairs the easy Working of the 2.8 to the position i thereof. j
in rigs'.
adapted to be engaged by a cam maschine."andy requires a greater driving power. 4 As'heretofore stated, one of the principal objects of the present invention is to time' the movements of this brake member so that it will be brought out of engagement with the dri-ve shaft just prior .to lthe clutching of the drive shaft with the' drive member, and Will be brought into engagement with the drive shaft just' after the unclutching of 75 the drive member from the drive shaft, permitting the brake member to accomplish the desired result, namely,l stopping the shaft when the drive member is nnclutched, but
eliminating the objectionable feature of having thebreke in constant enga ment With-the shaft. while the shaft is being rotated.
The clutch mechanism is best illustrated nisin is old in the art and no claim of A based upon it in the present application. The clutch member consists of a bolt 40, whichx is held Within a recess il of a fly wheel or other driving member 42. The
bolt is held normally projected by a tension member 43. Located below. the bolt is a locking` member ft-t having a shouldei` -t5 face 4-6' on ahead/t7 (see Figs. 9 and 10). tion of the cam face 46 is todepress the locking member "l-t against the force of a spring 48 when it is desired to release the holt 40.
