PACKAGE FOR GAS-MANTLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK V. Bow- MAN and IVILBUR S. I-IUNN, citizens of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packages for Gas-Mantles; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a perspective View of a box for gas mantles constructed in accordance with our invention, and shown with the top of the box and top wings open. This invention relates to an improvement in packages for incandescent gas mantles, and particularly to packages for mantles for so called inverted gas burners which mantles are connected with a ring or head by which they are suspended.
The object of this invention is to provide a collapsible paper box in which these man tles may be packed and held so as to be safely transported; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out our invention we form the box proper in the usual manner of a knock down paper box which includes a front 2, back 3, sides 4, 5, bottom 6 and top 7. The sides are provided with folding wings 8 and 9, while the top and bottom are provided respectively with tuck flaps 10 and 11. Secured to the back 3 of the box is a pocket 12 formed from paper with a notch 13 corresponding substantially in width to the diameter of the head 14 of a gas mantle. These mantles are provided with radial fingers 15, 16 and 17. The pocket is also formed with a flap 18 which is adapted to be turned up so as to close the open end Specification of Letters Patent.

of the notch 13, and preferably this flap 18 will be formed with a rectangular opening 19 corresponding to the end of one of the fingers projecting radially from the head. The box thus provided with its pocket is adapted to be knocked down in the usual way, and as shown in Fig. 4t of the drawings, for convenience in shipping and is then set up in the usual manner as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings in which the cover and wings are shown in the open position. The head 14 of the gas mantle is inserted into the notch 13 of the pocket, and two of the fingers 15 and 16 will pass beneath the edge of the notch and so as to be retained by the wall of the pocket. The flap 18 is then folded up across the end of the finger 17 and this finger 17 may enter the hole 19 in the flap so that the mantle is firmly held in position. The wings 8 and 9 are then folded inward and the top 7 folded in position, and the tuck flap 10 passed between the upper edges of the wings and the front 2 of the box so as to close the box and firmly hold the mantle in place.
WVe claim 1. The combination with a folding box including side wings and a top, of a pocket located within the box, said pocket formed with a notch opening at the outer end, a flap at the outer end of the pocket and adapted to be turned up to close the open end of the notch.
2. The combination with a folding box, of a pocket located therein, said pocket formed with a notch opening at the outer end, and with a flap adapted to be turned up to close the open end of the pocket, said flap formed with an opening adapted to be entered by one arm of a gas mantle located in the pocket, said flap being held by the top of the box.
