To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Ems'rus H. BARNES and ERNEST CLEMENS Tnonsormnor, citizens of the United States, residing at the borough, of Brooklyn, in the county of been sharpened-and first corrugating the strip and then simultaneously cutting up such strip into pieces of a suitable length, which are received one at a time as cut into a hopper in a vertical or edgewise position and are then forced into and across the meeting edges of adjacent pieces of wood for the purpose of joining up parallel strips.
In the device of our invention we employ a pair of meshing corrugated rollers in width about agreeing with the width of the strip of metal to be corrugated. These rollers are in suitable bearings, one set of which are spring-pressed toward the other. Upon the shaft of one of these rollers is a ratchet and a pawl and lever device for feeding the rollers and in connection with said pawl and lever device, we employ means for adjusting the extent of feed so that the desired number of teeth of the ratchet may be taken up with each feed movement. This device is actuated in opposite directions by the vertical movement of a hammer device employed in driving the metal plates into the wood.
We employ a spring returned cutter device for severing the corrugating strip into pieces of predetermined length; the supporting body of the machine carrying these parts having an internal inclined chamber receiving the cut offpieces and down which they move assuming by gravity the desired vertical posit-ion beneath the hammer device.
The cutter structure and the hammer device are actuated by a suitable prime mover that forms no part of our present invention, and the movements of these 'parts are so timed that the driving of one piece of metal and the cutting of another are substantially simultaneous; the feed and corrugating of -provement. interior parts of the body supportwith the the strip being efiected on the rising movement of the hammer device and intermediate of the aforesaid movements, all of which is hereinafter more specifically set forth.

The shaft 0 of the corrugating roller 6 passes through bearing boxes e received in slots formed in the bracket plates 0, 0 said bearing boxes being movable vertically in said slots. ,Beneath these bearing boxes e there are springs 4, supporting screws 5 and set screws 6. .The springs 4 normally support the bearing boxes 2 and while strips already corrugated are being run through to be cut up and driven into the wood. The springs 4 are'however' perforated for the points of the set supporting-screw 5 to pass through for 'a positive bearing and hold against the boxes as the parts are employed in this condition when the strip of metal is being corrugated by the rollers d, 6. Referring particularly to Figs. 3 and 4 nrepresents. the cutter bar, o a. yoke frame witha head portion 0 recessed to receive the cutter bar n in a channel provided therefor in the body bfthere being a groove 17 in the back portion of the yoke-frame'o and an interiorly threaded hole in the cutter bar to. receive an ofi-set screw stem n ,-in fact this screw it is provided with two off-set portions or shoulders one adjacent to the threaded reduced end which passes into the cutter bar n, and the other shouldered portion which extends across the face of the the upper end of the yoke frame 0 a screw 18, the head of which seats on the sh0ul-' dered, portion of the cutter bar n, and the head 0 of the yoke frame is formed with side prolongations beneath which come the springs 19 which yield when the cutter bar structure is forced downward by any instrumentality and which when pressure is released on the cutter bar device return same to an initial position. We provide a cutter b d or shear arm 1' (see Fig. 1) set in an inclfned position in a recess in the back face of the plate b and secured in position by a locking nut 20 which when loosened provides for setting up this cutter bed in the desired position or for removing the same so as to re-grind or true its cutting edge.

In the further operation of the machine and in the event of the failure of the cutter device to cut off a strip and the feed of the other corrugated strip d in the machine this pivoted plate t as a door yields and permits the corrugated strip to pass through above the same and beneath the guide plate'u, because if a double length of the fastener deviceis cut off in the machine the recess 14 would not receive it and in such event the double length strip passes out into the recess.

We claim as our invention: g
1. The combination with devices for defleeting and thus corrugating astrip of sheet metal, of devices for cutting said strip'into suitable lengths and thereby forming-fastening plates, and devices "for driving the cut 'upstrips or fasteners successively and edge the cut up strips and other devices for driv ing the cut up strips or fasteners successively and edgewise in the line of the corrugations into wood.
4. The combination with a suppo-rtirig body of metal and associated supporting parts, of a pair of corrugating rollers for corrugating a strip of metal, a cutter device and cutter bed for severing the corrugated strip into suit-able lengths and thereby forming fastening plates, devices providing for feeding'a cut up strip at a time, and a hamme r device for driving the said out up strips v or fasteners successlvely and edgewi'se 1n the line of the corrugations into wood.
5. In a machine for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood, the combination with a pair of corrugating rollers, shafts and bearings therefor, of a ratchet and pawl device upon the shaft of one of said rollers for rotating the same, a cam arm co-acting.with the pawl device and a vertically movable device for acting upon the pawl device and the cam arm successively for effecting the feed of the corrugating rollers. o j
6. In a machine for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal int-o wood, the combination with a pair of corrugating rollers, shafts and bearings therefor, of a ratchet and pawl device upon the shaft of one of said rollers for rotating the same, a cam arm co-acting with the pawl device, a hammer device movable vertically, a roller carried thereby and adapted to act successively upon the pawl device and the cam arm to shift the,position of, said parts in elfecting the movement of the corrugating rollers and the feed of the corrugated strip.
7. In a machine for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips ofmetal'into wood, the combination with a pair of corrugating *rollers, shafts and bearings therefor, of a pawl arm and jaw, a cam arm and jaw, said jaws being perforated and interlocking and mounted upon the shaft of one of the corru-- gating rollers, a ratchet mounted upon the same shaft of the corruggting roller, a spring controlled pawl mounted on the pawl arm and engaging the teeth of the ratchet, meansfor controlling the associated relation of the said pawl arm and cam arm, a vertical movable hammer devlce and a roller thereon adapted to successively-contact with thepawl arm and cam arm for actuating the ratchet and pawl device and for revolving the corrugated rollers and feedingthe strip.
8. Ina machine ifo rcorrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood, the combination-With a pair of corrugating rollers, shafts and bearings therefor, of a pawl arm and-jaw, a cam arm and jaw, said jaws perforated and interlocking v and mounted upon the shaft of one of the corrugating rollers, a ratchet mounted upon the same shaft of the corrugating roller, a spring controlled pawl mounted on the pawlarm and engaging the teeth of the ratchet, a lug plate having an elongated opening and adapted to fit over the same shaft of the corrugated roller, said lug plate having opposite edge lugs and a central lug, the central lug coming between the jaws and the edge lugs outside the jaws and said lug plate-adapted for a radial movement with reference to said shaft so as to increase or lessen the opening between said jaws, devices for securing the lug plate in position,
I a vertical movable hammer device and a roller thereon adapted to successively confact with the pawl arm and cam arm for actuating the ratchet and pawl device and for revolving the corrugated rollers and feeding the strip.
9. In a machine for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood,
the combination with a supporting body having an inclined recess 14 and a cutter bar, of a pivoted dog having an inclined outer surface received in said recess, a spring for maintaining the normal position thereof and an edge or shoulder 70 at the upper end thereof and an adjacent cutterbed or shear.
10. A machine having suitable combined devices for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood, a supporting body, the cutter bar and cutter bed, a 5 bar If, a plate t pivoted thereto in a recess of the supporting body in line with the corrugating movement of the strip, aspring for normally holding the pivoted plate in position and a guide plate beneath which the i corrugating strip passes.

A machine having suitable combined devices for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood, the corrugating devices comprising corrugating rollers, their shafts and bearings, a ratchet mounted upon the shaft of one of said rollers, a pawl for engaging and moving the said ratchet, devices mounted upon the same shaft as the ratchet and having a pivotal re 12'0 lation thereon, one of which devices carries the said pawl and a device co-acting with the aforesaid devices and having an adjustable relation thereto whereby the extent of movement imparted, to the pawl may be varied at the pleasure of the operator, and a device for actuating said adjustable parts and the pawl.

A machine having suitable combined devices for corrugating, cutting up and driving stripsfof metal into wood, the cor-- rugating devices comprising a pair of corrugating rollers, their shafts and bearings therefor, a ratchet mounted on the shaft of one of said rollers, a pawl arm and jaw and pawl arm and cam arm and their jaws and having a radial movement with relation to the same shaft of the corrugating roller and means for securing said device to the said jaws for adjustably fixing the relation of said jaws to one another to control the extent of movement imparted to the said ratchet by the pawl, and a device for actuating said adjustable parts and the pawl.

A machine having suitable combined devices for corrugating, cutting up and driving strips of metal into wood, a supporting body having an opening recess or cavity therein in line with the corrugating feed of the strips of metal, means for guiding the strip as corrugated and a" yielding device secured to said supporting body in the line of feed and which when the strip,fails to be cut permits. the corrugated strip to pass through the said supporting body to the rearwhere the failure 'to out upthe strip is made apparent and the piece may be removed.
14. In a machine of the class specified, the combination of automatic means for forming transverse corrugations in a recmeans for receiving and holding the finished 1 fastener in position for edgewise insertion, and driving mechanism for engaging the endsof the corrugations to insertthe same endwise.
15. In a machine of the class specified, the combination of a combined corrugating and feeding mechanism adapted to' fo 'rm transverse corrugations in a'strip of sheet .metal and feed the same forward in the direction of ,its length a cutting mechanism for cutting, off lengths of said transversely corrugated strip of sheet metal, adrivin mechanism for engagingthe ends of the sai corrugations to insert each finishedfastener edgewise, and means for guiding the sadtransversely corrugated strip of sheet metal to the said cutting and driving means.

In a machine of the class specified, adapted for making and driving corrugated sheet metal fasteners the combination of means for first forming transverse corrugations in the .strip of sheet metal, means for then cutting off a suitable length of said strip of corrugated sheet metal, means for finally driving the sheet metal e'dgewise and in a direction to insert the corrugations endwise, and suitable operating connections by which the corrugating andcuttlng and (luving operations are performed on each fastener, in the order mentioned, and means for at will varying the number of corrugations for each fastener.
17. In a machine of the class specified, adapted for making and driving corrugated sheet metal fasteners, the combination of automatic means for feeding a transversely corrugated strip of sheet metal, automatic means for cutting ofi' a suitable length of the strip of sheet metal thus-fed in a direction crosswise of its transverse corrugations, means for driving the sheet metal fasteners edgewise and in a direction toinsert the corrugations endwise, and suitable connections by which the feeding and cutting and driving operations are performed on each transversely corrugated fastener in the order mentioned, and means for at will varying the number of corrugations for each fastener.

In a machine of the class specified, the combination of a combined corrugating and feeding mechanism adapted to form transverse corrugations in a strip of sheet metal and feed the same forward in the direction of'its length"; a cutting mechanism for .cutting ofl" lengths of said transversely corrugated strip of sheet metal, a driving mechanism for engaging the ends of the said cor-- rugations to' insert each finished fastener ,edgewise', and means for guiding the said transversely corrugated strip of sheet metal ito the said cutting and driving means, and jmeans for at will varying the number of cor- 'rugations for each fastener. 19. A machine for makingv and driving corrugated'sheet metal fasteners by inserting the fasteners edgewise in the line of i their corrugations, comprising mechanism for driving the said fasteners, and automatic ;mechanism in said machine for providing or forming a plurality of transverse corrugations on each fastener before it is driven.
20. In a machine of the character described, means for feeding a metal strip, means for varying said feed, to produce fasteners of different widths, means for severin a fastener from said strip, and means for driving the fastener edgewise.

In a machine of, the character described,the combination with a support for the material to be joined, of means for feeding'a metal strip, means for varying said feed to produce fasteners of different widths, means for severing the =end.of said strip, means, for holding said severed end, and means forforcing said severed end edgewise from said holding means and intothe material aforesaid. 22. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a support for the material to be joined, of means for imparting a step-by-step movement to a metal strip, means for varying the extent of such movement, to produce fasteners of different widths, means for successivelysevering the ends of said strip, means for holding said severed ends, and means for forcing said severed ends edgewise from said holding means and into the material aforesaid.

26. In a machine of the class specified, adapted for making and drivingcorrugated sheet metal fasteners, the combination of automatic means for first forming' transverse corrugations in the strip of sheet metal,
automatic means for then cutting off a suitable length of said strip of corrugated sheet metal, automatic means for finally driving the sheet metal edgewise and in a direction .to insert the corrugations endwise, and suit able operating connections by which the corrugating and cutting and driving operations are performed on each fastener in the order mentioned. v

In a machine of the character described, the combinationLWith a support for the material to be joined, of "a transverse support arranged above said support having arranged thereon a feeding device adapted to advance a metal strip, means for adjustin saidfeeding device to vary the extent o the feed, a, chuck arranged adjacent to said feeding device adapted to receive one end of said strip, a cutting device adapted to sever the end of the strip within said said striplongitudinally in a horizontal position Within said chuck, and means for forcingsaid'severed end edgewise from said chuck, and into the material to be joined, substantially as specified.
