ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
DEVICE FOR MAKING DESIGNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1912.
Application filed April 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,490.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,'LYNN L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Device for Making Designs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for making designs, and it has for its object to provide one having a bar carrying a marking member which contacts with a member sooured to a pivoted table, so that when. the table is rotated, and one end of the bar is articulated to a rocking plate, and the other end engages a guide, the reverse motion of the rocking plate will be instrument'al in producing the designs pleasipg in character;
Additional objects of the invention are to provide means for articulating the bar to anyone of a plurality of points on the rocking plate to adjust the position of the guide relatively to the pivot point of the table, and to articulate an end of the bar to a member having a continuous rotary movement instead of to the rocking late.
Stillother objects theinvention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the referred form of the invention is discloset.
- In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the-views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention: Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary" view showing the means for adjusting the position of the guide relatively to the table; Fig. 4 is a View showin means for supporting. the marking mem er in any one off the openings in the bar z and' Fig. 5 1s a view showing one of the designs which may be produced with my device.
' 'By referring to the drawings it will be 45 seenthat to the board 5 there is pivoted the table 6, a plate 7 and an operating member 8 being also pivoted to the board 5. The table 6, the-plate 7 and the dperating mem-f her 8 have moves 9 in their peripheries for receiving the belt 10. It will therefore be seen that when the operating member'8 is rotated= by means of the handle 11, it will rotate the plate 7 and the table 6, In the plate 7 there are a plurality oforifices 12.
l 5 A second plate 13' is pivoted to the board 5,
s this second plate 13, which I call the rocking plate, havinga plurality of orifices .l-t. The plate 7 and the rocking plate 13 are connceted'by a link 15, this link 15 having a seen that when-the pin 18 is introduced into one of the orifices 16 in the link 15, and this pin is also introduced into one of theo'rifices 12 in the plate 7; this link will be articulated to the said plate 7. In the same way the'pin 19 is introducedinto one of the orifices 16 in the link 15, thispin being also ing plate 13. By this means the continuous rotary movement of the plate 7 will give the. plate 13' the rocking movement. The side of the board 5 has an upwardlyextending .rim 20, on which slides a bracket 21, the bracket 21 being held in position relatively to therim 20 of the board by' a set-screw 22, which passes through a threaded orifice in the bracket 21, and engages the rim 20. This bracket 21 also has an upwardly extending guide in 23, which is disposed in-a slot 24 of the bar 25. This bar 25 is disposed across the table 6, and in an opening in its terminal 26 there is disposed a pin 27, this pin 27 also extending into one of the orifices 14 in the rocking plate 13.
To support the terminal 26 of the bar 25 a washer 28 is disposed between the said terminal 26 and the rocking-plate 13, the pin 27 being disposed through the washer. In the bar there are a plurality of vertical open ings 29, the sides 30 of which converge, there being horizontal orifices 31 in-the bar, 25, which extend to the said openings 29. In any one of these openings 29 the marking member 32 may be inserted, and when the marking member isdisposed in one of the said opening 29 it may be held in position by a pin- 33, which extends through the orifice 31 and engages one side of the marking member 32, and presses it'agai-nst one of the sides 30 of the opening 29. On the rim 20 at the side of the board 5 there is ,a scale 34, so that the position of the bracket '21 relatively to the pivot point of the table 6 maybe readily determined. When the bracket 21 is secured by the set screw 22 bar 25 may he articulated to the plate 13 in apredetermined position by the insertion of. the pin 27 in one of the orifices 14 in the said rocking plate 13. This having been done the link 1'5 may be used to connect the plate 7 and the rocking plate 13 as may he plurality of orifices 16. It will tli'cretore be disposed in one of the orifices 14 in the rocktothe rim-20 in the desired position the orifices 12 in the plate '7, and the pin 19,-
which is disposed in another orifice 16 in the link 15, may be disposed in any one of the orifices let in the rocking plate 13.
It will be understood that the character of the design may be materially changed by the movement of the bracket 21 on the rim 20 of the board, by the insertion of the pin 27 in another one of the orifices 14, and by the adjustment of the link 15 to the plate 7, and the rocking plate 13, by means of the pins 1.8 and 19. As another means ofaltering the design the marking member 32 may be disposed in any one of the openings 29 in the bar 28. in which opening it may be secured by the'pin The plate 13, which rocks in one direction, and then in the other, gives a reverse motion to the marking member hen desired the link 15 may be removed and the terminal 26 of the bar 25 may be articulated to the plate 7 by. the insertion of the pin 27 in one of the orifices 12 in the said plate 7. When this has been done there will be no reverse marking in the design, such asshown at 35 in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Having thus. described my invention I claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device for making designs a pivoted table, a pivoted plate, means for simultaneously rotating the table and the plate, a second pivoted plate, a link connecting the two plates, by which the second plate is operated by the first-mentioned plate, a bar articulated at one end to the second-mentioned plate, and disposed across the table, a guide for the other end of the bar, and a marking member carried by the bar.
2. In a device for making designs a pivoted table, a pivoted plate having an orifice, means for simultaneously rotating the table and the plate, a second pivoted plate having an orifice, a bar, a pin at one end of the bar, adapted to be disposed in the orifice in either of the plates, a guide for the other end of the bar, a marking member carried by the bar, and a,link for connecting the two plates when the pin on the bar is disposed in the orifice in the second-mentioned plate.
3. In a device for making designs a pivoted table, a pivoted plate, means for rotating the table and the plate, a second pivoted plate having orifices, a link articulated to the first-mentioned plate, a pin on the link adapted to be disposed in any one of the orifices in the second-mentioned plate, a bar, a pin at one end of the bar adapted to be disposed in any one of the orifices in the second-mentioned plate, the bar' being disposed across the table, a guide for the other end of the bar, and a marking member carried by the bar.
t. In a device for making designs a bar having a vertical opening, the sides of which converge in one direction, there being a horizontal orifice in the bar leading to the opening, a marking member disposed in the opening, a pin disposed in the orifice for pressing the marking member against one of the sides of the bar.
5. In a device for making designs'a bar,
having a vertical opening, there being a horizontal orifice in the bar leading to the opening, a marking member disposed in the opening, and a pin disposed in the ori fice for pressing the marking member' against the sides of the opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
