Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [03,930, dated June '7, 1870.

To ali whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, D. G. RITtrENHoUsE, of Shelby Depot, inthe county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Scrapers, which is described as follows:

The improved implement to which my invention relates consists of a suitable moldboard or extended share, a ,east-frame77 of peculiar construction,for the support of such mold board, a straight, or opproximately straight, beam attached to said frame at a point intermediate to its ends, a pair of handles, and a brace extending from a strut of the handles to the heel of the frame, and attached intermediately to the rear end of the beam, as hereinafter set forth. The advantages claimed for the same are superior lightness, strength,

- and ease of handling, with increased simplicity 'and cheapness.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is amold-board side perspectiveview of my improved cotton-scraper adj usted for work. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of the cast-frame of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a rear eleva-v tion of said frame.

Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in the several gures.

A in the drawings represents 'a scraper mold-board; B, a straight beam; C C, handles; D, a stiffening-brace; and E my improved cast frame for uniting these parts. The said frame is constructed with the usual inclined front, z, for the support of the moldboard, an inclined standard, y, forming a part of the front,and provided with suitable means,

.fv w, for attaching the mold-board, and a soleplate, v. It is further constructed with asupplementary standard, u, extending upward and forward from at or near the rear end of the sole o, and terminating, with the standard y, in a head, t, on which the beam is fastened by a staple or perforatedlug, s, projecting from said head and traversingthe same, and a key, r, introduced in said staple above the beam.

The supplementary standard a is provided at its lower extremity with a flat side, q, and a bolt-hole, p, or their equivalent, for the attachment of the lower end of the stiffeningbrace D. The frame E is further constructed with its standards y a inclined or leaning to nieve the support of the beam, and thus counterbalanee the weight on the 1nold-board to facilitate controlling the implement. The beam B is provided with the inortise o, for the reception of the staple s of the frame, at a point removed from its rear end, as shown, its rear end being adapted for connection with the brace D. It will be adapted, further, at its front end for the reception of a suitable clevis. The brace D extends from a strut, u, of the handles G past the rear end of the beam B, where it is attached, m, to the attaching-surface q of the frame. It will be observed that a perfectly rigid joint of great strength is thus formed between the beamhandles and frame, while the latter may be very light and neat.

The mold-board A may be attached by a single bolt, Z, entering a hole, m, in the frame, its upper edge being supported byashoulder, w, or by other suitable means.

I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In a cotton-scraper, the frame E, having the supplementary standard u, with its attaching-surface q and bolt-holep, and the head t, with its staple s, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.

2. The arrangement of the mold-board A, beam B, handles C C, stiffening-brace D, and frame E, constructed substantially as represented and described, as and for the purpos s set forth.
