' COUNTING-MACHINE,
I Specification of Letteishtent. Application filed larch 25, 1911.
Patented Sept. 24', 1912.
Serial No, 616,863.
To all whom it may coiwern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. MELTON,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at resu t in forgetfulness on might be made. "85
I plete device.
. and use the same,
. acters of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California,'haveinvented certain new and useful Im rovements in Counting- Machines; and I 0 declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the charre-ference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in tallying or counting machines, the object of the invention being to produce a machine which will automatically tally or count and register the number of truckloads of material or merchandise handled in any particular line of business or locality such as for instance, truck loads of ain, feed, flour or in fact any kind of mere andise.
A further object of the invention is to produce a portable device for this purpose which may be moved from one part of a store or warehouse according to the locality in which the trucking is to be done, thus avoiding the necessity of compelling the wheeling of the trucks to any fixed point for the urpose of tallying, which often would the part of the truck handler whereby an inaccurate tally A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is desiglned. Y
hese objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the com- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, I first provide a portable frame comprising a base beam 1, and side supporting members 2 having suitable brace members 3, 4 and 5 as shown.
Secured on one side of the member 1 is Ielined edge 7.
of this plate 6 is a lip or cross bar 8 having as shown in aifiat plate 6 having an outer beveled or in- Hinged on the front end an inner curved or beveled edge 9. This plate 8 has an arm 10 connected by a rod 11 with a lever 12 fulcrumed on a bar 13 on one of the supporting frames 2. One end of the lever 12 is connected by a rod 1A with a weight 15 movable in a cylinder 16 secured on the member 1, which weight normally holds the plate 8 in vertical position Fig. 1. The other end of the lever 12 is connected by a spring 17 to an actuating arm 8 on a registering device 19 adapted to register as will hereinafter appear.
In practice the truck handler runs the truck on to the plate 6 where it strikes ,the cross plate 8 and turns it to horizontal posi tion which action causes the arm 10 to pull the rod 11 to actuate the lever 12, whereby the register 19 is operated to register once, and hence since the register 19 is one of the counting type it will register each and every truck, and hence the entire number of truck loads which pass over the plate 6. The weight 15 each time returns the plate 8 to normal vertical posit-ion.
The spring 17 compensates for any undue strain which the register 19 might be subjected to.
20 are back stops on each side of the vertical position and prevent it from being bent backward should anything strike it from the front end which would result in an inaccurate tally by the register 19.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and ,desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A counting machine comprising a vertical frame, a register on said frame, a horizontal plate on said frame, a cross plate hinged to one end of said horizontal plate, means for maintaining said cross plate in normal vertical position, back stops spaced member 6 to maintain the plate 8 in proper memes apart on each sicle of said horizontal plate, In testimonv whereof I afiix my signature saicl crass plate restinig against said back in presence 0 two witnesses. sto s W on in a vertica posit-ion, an means con nected between said cross plate and said ROBERFI MELTON' 5 register whereby When said cross plate is Witnesses:
turned to horizontal position it will cause JOSHUA 'B. WEBSTER, said register to operate as described. STEPHEN N. BLEWE'I'I.
