Description

new States fittest Gtiifline.
ALPHEUS P. NOYES, OF MIDDLETON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN S. ANDREWS, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No; 103,916, dated June 7 1870.
IMPROVED DOOR-MAT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LALPHEUS P. Noyes, of Middleton, in the county of Essex and State of Massar ohusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Mats; and Idohereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
This invention is an improved door-mat, and consists in the construction of the mat, which may be of any of the usual or known forms and mode of construction, of oiled thread.
A foot-mat made of thread thus prepared is found to be more durable and is better in its operation. It does not absorb moisture, as mats of ordinary material, and therefore dries more readily, and, as for the same reason the mud does not adhere to it to so great an extent, it is always more available for the purpose of cleansing the boots aiid shoes of those pass ing over it.
In the construction of my mat I propose to use harnesses or heddles, which, by reason of wear, have become useless for their original purpose. These may be obtained in considerable quantities at the factories where they are used, and heretofore they have never been made available for any useful purpose. They are made of threads which are oiled and then varnished, and are thus ex'eellently adapted for my im proved mat. Every harness has two selvages, and, when rendered useless through wear in their proper oflice, can be out in two, and each part sewed by its selvage to a foundation cloth, leaving the arnished threads to spread out and form the mat.
I do not claim a thread door or foot-mat of any par tioular form, but
Having thus fully described my invention, WVhat I claim as an improved article of manufacture, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent of the United States, is
A doornnat composed of oiled or varnished threads of loom harnesses or heddles, when out as described, and secured to any suitable foundation, as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 4th day of May, 1870.
ALPHEUS P. NOYES.
