CHANGEAIBLE TYPE-BLOCKS.

Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Sept. r9122.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN J. Hownnn, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and-State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new and useful linprovements in Changeable Type-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in new and useful improvements in interchangeable typeblocks which are used for stencihn or stamping and for snnllar purposes. uch
type-blocks are commonly made of rubber or other compressible material and are held onthe holder by the angular flanges of the latter engaging the lateral edges or basefianges of the former. Owing to the viscosity of the ink used, the type tend to adhere to the surface being marked, frequently pulling the type-blocks loose from the holder and causing much inconvenience and delay.
My object is to prevent this loosening of the type-blocks from the holder, and I accomplish the same by providing the lateral edges or base flanges of the type-blocks with grooves or troughs which, when the type adhere to the surface being marked, engage and interlock with the angular flanges of the holder and prevent the loosening of the type-blocks from the holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a holder of the rocker type with my improved type-blocks mounted thereon; Fig. 2 is a section of the same along the line ll-Jl in Fig. 1, but showing the type-block bowed up as if adhering to the surface being printed; Fig. 8 is a perspective of one of my type-blocks, and Fig.
4 is a vertical, transverse, sectional view of my type-block unproved with base-flanges.
.The following is a detailed description of the drawings:
A represents a type-holder, which for the sake of illustration is shown as a rocker holder, composed of face plate 1 provided at its end with rearwardly' bent portions 2-2 between which is secured the wooden hand-grasp 3. lt will be understood however, lhat my iu'iproved type-blocks may be tltlVtlIllHgl'QOllFl V used with any of the holders now in use. The holder A is provided along its lateral edges with metal flanges B-l composed of ayertical portion 4 and an inwardly extendmg, substantially horizontal, portion 5.
C@ are the typo-blocks having on their faces various letters, numbers or other features, as required. Said blocks are usually provided; with basefianges 6-6 which are seated under the lateral flanges B-B of the holder to retain the type-blocks on the holder. It is evident that with no grooves ortroughs provided in the baseflanges of the type-blocks, when the said blocks are bowed outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, by the adherence of the type to the surface being printed, said flanges would be readily drawn from beneath the flanges B-B, thus releasing the type-blocks from the holder. 1 provide, however, the flanges 6-6 with grooves or troughs 7-4 in their upper surfaces which, when the type-blocks are bowed upwardly as shown in Fig. 2, engage or interlock with the flanges l3-B of the holder and render the forcible withdrawal of said base-flanges from beneath said holder-danges impossible.
In case the type-blocks are unprovided with base-flanges, as in Fig. 1, and the bases of the" blocks are engaged by the holderflanges, the grooves or troughs "?-7 may be formed in the top faces of the type-block adjacent to its lateral edges.
The type-blocks are mounted on the holder either by sliding the former under the flan es BB at one end of the holder or pincning the blocks so as to compress their bases sufficiently to permit the insertion of their base-flanges or lateral edges under said flanges B-B.
What I desire to claim is l. The combination with a holder, pro-- vided with retaining-flanges extending along the longitudinal edges thereof, of removable type-blocks disposed in said holder and having, in their upper faces, grooves extendiu parallel and adjacent to said flanges, sai flanges being normally out of engagement with said grooves, but engaging the same when said type hlocks are bowed upward. I
2. The combination with a holder. provided with rotaining-ilauges cxteudingalong the longitudinal edges thereof, of removable lype-bl chs disposed in said holder undhav- 'ing lateral base-flanges disposed under said flSignedi-mt Pittsburgh; Penna, this 13th retaining-flanges, and provided in their upday of J inie' 1912. per faces, with grooves extending-paralll v V and adjacent to said retaining-flanges, said JOHN J. HOWARD. v5 retaining-flanges being normally out of en gagement with said grooves, but engaging VVitnessesz' the same when said type-blocks ar bowed WVILLI M Jnmsms, upward. Y J AS. MOILWRATH.
