GOVERNING DEVICE,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Ridgeville, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to governing ,devices and more particularly to circuit controlling devices, though I may, of course, employ my device wherever a device of this character finds a use. When used as a circuit controller, the device may be associated with the armature shaft of a current generator and ma control a circuit associated therewith. I hen associated with a rotary member of this character, I mount the flexible member upon the rotatable member in such a way that a part of such flexible membermay move in the direction substantially parallel to the shaft and control the circuit or other means governed by the device.
The object of my invention and the invention itself will be best understood by reference to the particular embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, while the scope of thev invention will' be better understood from the appended claims.

While I have shown my invention employed with an electric generator and as controlling an electric circuit, it will be understood that I may employ it with any suitable form of mechanism and impose upon it any duty which it is capable of performin without departin from the spirit of the invention, unless ot erwise indicated by the claims.
In the form shown, I illustrate at l a dynamo; 2 is the armature shaft, which would here be a rotating or rotary member, though this might as well be a portion of an engine, or some other mechanism. .A movable member 3, which may be flexible,- and is preferably as shown in the drawing, a flexible spring, is carried by the rotary member 2. This member may be mounted upon the rotary member bymeans of a supporting member 4, which is here shown as disk shape, and which bears a hollow circular boss 5 at the center, into which the end of the shaft 2 fits and to which the member 4 may be fastened by set screw 6. The part 4: is perforated at 7 preferably diametrically opposite the point at which the member 3 is attached to the support. The member 3 is attached preferably at one end by of the member 3, preferably the end 9 which is opposite the fastened end, is free to move ma direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft 2. A. weight 10 may be mounted upon the free end 9 of the flexible member, extending through the opening 7 with its center mass outside of the Vertical plane in which the flexible member is attached to the support. The support is cut away, as shown at 11 for a purpose to be described. The parts are so adjusted that when the armature shaft reaches a certain rate of rotation, the centrifugal force will tend to throw the weight 10 outward, being restrained in that direction, it will move in a direction substa ntially' parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft, moving the free end of the member 3 with it and performing the duty which has been imposed upon the parts. In the form shown, its duty consists of closing an electric switch S. This switch is formed by a contact 12 connected to the frame 13 by a contact support 14 and a contact 15, which in the form shown is carried upon a second flexible member 16. This flexible member consists of a spring mounted upon the frame 13. The two flexible members are connected together by a stud 17, which, in the form shown, is applied to the member 3, substantially in the carrying the fastening means 17 along with it. A hearing 18 is mounted upon the mem-' ber 3in the recess 11 in the support 4, into which (me end of the fastening means 17 is journaled. I prefer to stiffen the ends of the two flexible springs and best attain this object by turning up the ed es of these members, as shown at 30. The i exible member 16 is stiffened by a plate 31 fastened to the under side thereof by rivets 32, though, of course, these stiffening means are not essential. Thus, in the form shown, when the rotary member rotates at a pro-deteraxis of rotation of the rotary member 2, so that the support may be rotated without a suitable means such as screws 8. A part particular embodiment of my invention,
what I wish to claim is:
1. In a circuit controller, the combination with a rotating member of a supporting member carried thereby, a flexible member carried by said supporting member and attached thereto, one end of said flexible member being free, a weight carried by the free end of said flexible member, a frame, a flexible contact carrying member mounted in said frame, a contact carried thereby, means to connect said flexible member with said flexible contact carrying member, said means being in the axis of rotation of the rotating member and a stationary contact adapted to coiiperate with said first named contact to form an electric switch, said weight being moved by centrifugal force to close said contacts when the rotating memberreaches a predetermined speed.
2. In a circuit controller, the combination with a rotating member, a supporting member, a flexible member mounted on said supporting member, perpendicular to said rotating member, a part of said flexible member being free to move parallel to the long axis of said rotating member, a frame, a second flexible member mounted at one end on said frame and connected to said first named flexible member, a contact carried by said second named flexible member, a second contact on said frame cooperating with said first contact, said contacts constituting an electric switch cont-rolled by said first named flexible member, said movable part of said flexible member being moved when the rotating member reaches a predetermined speed to operate said switch.
3. Ina circuit'controller, the combination with a rotating member, a flexible member carried by said rotating member, one'end of' said member being free to move substantially parallel to the 'long axis of said rotating member, a weight carried by the free end of said flexible member, a frame, a contact carrying member mounted in said frame, a contact carried thereby, means to connect said flexible member'with said contact carrying member, said means being in the axisof rotation of the rotating member and a stationary contact adapted to cooperate with said first named contact, said weight being moved by centrifugal force to operate said switch when the rotating member reaches a predetermined speed.
- 4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rotating member, a movable member connected to said rotating member on one side thereof, a weight on said movable member on the other side of said rotating member, said weight being moved in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of said rotating member, when the rate of rotation of said member reaches a predetermined amount, and a circuit controller governed by said movable member.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rotating member, a disk shaped support carried upon one end therev of, a flexible member attached at one end I near the edge of said supportand free to move at the other end, a weight mounted on the free end and adapted to move through an opening 'in the support when the centrifugal force has reached a predetermined value, and a switch controlled by said flexible member.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rotary member, a disk shaped supporting member mounted on one end of said rotary member, said supporting member having an opening therein near the periphery thereof, a flexible spring attached at one end, near the periphery of the supporting member and extending substantially diametrically across the disk and being free at the other ends, a weight mounted on the free end and extending through the opening in the disk, the major part of the weight being on the side of the support opposite the side upon which the spring is mounted, a frame, a second flexible spring mounted on said ,frame, means to connect said flexible springs together, said means being applied inthe axis of rotation of said rotary member, a contact carried by said second flexible member, a second contact carried by said frame, said contacts constituting an electric switch controlled by said rotary member.
