vIn practice, Crushers of the hammer type are frequently employed to reduce run-omi'ne coal for coling purposes, the machine beingr em ployeddat the mine. The coal is brought from the mine in cars and dumped into a bin where it is con-ducted b v a chute directly to the Crusher. This chute i-s usually provided "ith a gate or valve for the purpose of cutting off the supply of coal from the machine when' desired and for obvious reasons. Frequently the coalcoming from the mine is wet and is introduced into the machine in large lumps. This wet coal has a tendency tb choke up the feed chute and frequentlv il. gorge will be formed in the chute, which, wl machine will prothe pit or bin under the Specification of Letters Patent. When in this lowered position, the breaker plate, swinging with the cage, moves against the front edge of the cover, as shown by dotted lines, and preterably under a shoulder in the tecd chute so that the material being fed to the machine through the feed chute 16 will not enter the grinding chamber. i
17 indicates a detleeting plate, preferably pivoted at its lower edge to the bottom of the front 'all 2, and when said plate is in the position shown in full lines, it may rest against lugs 1 on the side frame castings.
The front wall 2 is provided with an opening f2 and when the detlectin'g plate is in thc position shown by full lines and the cage is lowered, the breaker plate acts as a valve or gate, t0 prevent the material from entering the grinding chamber' and compels said material to take a path alongside of the grinding chamber so that when it strikes the detlecting plate, it will be diverted through the opening 2 outside of the inachine. f
If desired, the deflecting plate ma)T be swung to a. vertical position to close the opening 2'* and locked in such vertical position by means of a locking devicelS operated by `land onthe oiitside of thc lnachine.
lVhen the detlecting plate is in such vertical position and the cage is lowered, the material will not be detlected outside of the machine, or permitted to drop int-o the bin or receptacle under the machine.
I do not claim in this application, thc pivotcd grinding cage or winding mechanism employed for raisingand lowering the same, as the same is disclosed in the patent to M. IP WVilliams, No. 8-t3,729dated February 12, 1907, except so far as they enter into a novel combination of elements set forth in the followingclaims.
What l claim is: l
1. In a machine of thc character described, the combination of hammers, a grinding surface, a breaker plate upon which the material is primarily crushed, said breaker plate having an extension, and means forV moving said breaker plate wherebyv said exmaterial to' the grinding surface.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of hammers, a pivoted grinding surface, and a pivoted breaker plate, said grinding surtace and breaker platev being connected so as to move together, whereby, when the grinding surface is lowered, the breaker ,plate will shut oit the supply of material to the machine. 3. In a machine of the character described, the comljiination ot' hammers,l a movable `grinding surface. means for permitting said lgrinding' surface to be lowered and for raising said grindingsurface agin to operative position, and a pivoted' b'ri'ilrer platel connected to said grinding' surface, whereby when the grinding surface is lowered, the breaker plate will shut ot'fthe supply of material from the machine. l

In a machine ot the character described, the combination otl hammers. a grinding surface, a feed hopper. one wall of'whish is movable to shut otl' the supply of material to the grinding surface, and mains for directing' the material outside of the machine when said wall is moved to its shut-olf position.

Ina machine of the character described, the combination of hammers, a grinding surtace, a pivoted breaker' plate, and a pivoted dctlecting plate for detlecting material flowing` in front of said breaker plate when the latter is raised.
7. ln a machine of the character described, the combination of a casing, the front wall of which is provided with an-opening, hainmcrs, a grindingr surface, a pivoted br xaker ptatc means for moving the breaker plate to shut otl the supply of material to the grinding surface, and a detlecting plate for detlecting material through said opening or permitting said material to tall within the machine when the breaker-plate is raised.
8. ln a mill, the combination of a grinding cylinder having a grinding cage, beaters adapted to coperate with said cage, a. feed hopper eoxmnunicating with said cylinder, and means for adjusting said cage whereby 'a portion thereof is moved to prevent ingress of material into said cylinder from said hopper.
