MACHINE FOR ATTACHING HOSE-CLAMPS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon CHRisTENsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jamaica, New York city, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Attaching Hose- Glamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ring shaped hose clamps and comprises a machine for automat-ically fastening such clamps about the end of a hose and the metal nipple or union inserted therein.
The machine is more particularly de signed to operate on clamps of the kind described in my pending application No. 661,781, filed November 22, 1911.
The best form of apparatus embodying my invention at present known to me is illustrated in the accompanying four sheets of drawings in which,

Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with parts broken away in section, showing it in the second posi tion. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing t 3 the parts in final position. Fig. 4 is a detail view part-1y in section of the locking device for the stop. Fig. 5 shows one of the blanks from which clamps are made, and Fig. 6 is a side view of a ring shaped clamp after it has been operated on by the machine.
Throughout the drawings like reference characters indicate like parts.
1 is a base plate to which the lower jaw or bed piece 2 is hinged at- 3. The upper g jaw or hinged member 4 is hinged to bed piece 2 at 5. The lower jaw 2 has a semicircular recess 6, which registers with the semicircular recess 7 in the upper jaw 4, to form a circular opening when the jaws are In this opening is placed the hose end 8 in which has been inserted the nipple 9, and around the hose is the ring shaped clamp 10 formed by bending a strip of metal 11 (see Fig. 5). At one end of this strip is the stamped up portion 12 under which the other narrowed end 13 of the band may be inserted. One of the jaws, preferably the upper one, 4, has a recess 14, formed radially to the semi-circular recess 7, large enough to receive the stamped up portion 12 and clear the same. The upper edge of the lower jaw or bed piece which forms the lower wall of the radial recess 14,when the jaws are forced together, has an upturned lip 15 adapted to engage and outwardly deflect the narrow end 13 of the clamp sticking under and through the stamped up loop 12, when the said end is forced down on the lip by the closmg of the jaws. Back of this lip is abored out portion 16 in which is mounted a plunger 17 having a beveled face 18 on its upper end and a beveled lower end 19 normally protruding from the under side of the lower jaw and resting on the base plate 1. The maximum protrusion is limited by stop 20 and normally maintained by spring 21, confined between shoulder 23 on the plunger and seat 22 formed in the bore 16 In this position the upper end of the plunger is approximately flush with the upper surface of the lower jaw, and the plunger moves in a direction substantially tangent to the circular opening formed by recesses 6 and 7 when thejaws are brought together.

set there is a sliding piece 24 the tail of the lever at one end, 30, and to the base plate at the other end, 31, normally tends to hold the hand lever in upright position and force 1 the stop piece 24 under the jaw 2. A pin 32 engages agroove 33 in shaft 26to prevent said shaft from slipping endwise out of its bearing in the base plate 1. I
34 is a locking pawl journaled at 35 on a lug fastened to the base plate normally engaging a notch 36 in stop 24, as shown in Fig. 4. The tail of pawl 34 rests in recess 37 in the front face of jaw 2, and is normally held up by spring 38 or equivalent device. 4
The operation of the apparatus is as folv lows-z The strip 11 being bent around the hose and the narrow end 13 stuck under loop 12, these parts are placed between the hinged jaws as shown'in Fig. 1, the hand iever being in its upright position, and the stop under the lower jaw,'all as there shown.
I Power is then applied to force the upper jaw down, as by means of yoke 40 attached to any convenient source of power. This forces the upper jaw to close down on the lower jaw causing the clamp strip 11 to closely hugthe hose end, binding it down on the" nipple, and forcing the narrow end 13 of the strip 11 farther through loop 12, as shown in Fig. 2. The protruding end 13 is turned outward bylip 15 on jaw 2 and 9 slides over the beveled face 18 on the upper end of plunger 17. The operator then turns the hand lever down into the position shown in Fig. 3, pulling stop 24 from under jaw 2. Locking pawl 34 then engages notch 36 in 7 stop 24 and holds it out of engagement.
13, of the clamp strip back along the outside of stamped up loop 12 and so fastening I the clamp securely in its posit-ion tightly gripping the hose end to the nipple, all as shown in Fig. 3. At the end of its downward movement jaw 2 strikes the tail of locking pawl 34, and trips it from engagement with stop 24. Consequently when the yoke 40 is lifted or the other applied force removed, the spring 21 expands, forcing jaw 2 upward, and pawl 34 being out of engagement, stop 24 slips back under jaw 2, thus bringing the*parts back into the position shown in Fig. 2. The upper jaw 4 is then lifted, the clamped hose and nipple removed, a new piece of hose and nipple with loose clamp put in the circular recess and the parts are in'the initial position shown in Fig. 1, ready for another operation- The advantages of my invention comprise its rapid, accurate and'largely automatic action. . Of course certain of the parts shown-could be omitted without entirely preventing the normal operation of others, and. it is not necessary to always use the: exact forms of stops,lccking devices and springs, illustrated and described. V

In a mechanism for fastening hose clamps, the combination of a bed piece having a semi-circular recess therein, and a hinged member having a similar semi-circular recess registering with that in the bed piece, the hinged member having a recess adapted to receive projecting ends of the clamp, and the bed piece having a beveled lip adapted. to engage and outwardlydefiect one end of the clamp when driven against it by the closing movement. of the hinged member, together with a plunger mounted in the bed piece and adapted to have one end projected into the recess in the hinged member in a direction substantially tangent to the circular recess formed when the bed piece and hinged member are forced to gether. g
3. In a mechanism for fastening hose clamps, the combination of a bed piece having a semi-circular recess therein, and a hinged member having a similar semi-circular recess registering with that in the bed piece, the hinged member having a recess adapted to receive projecting ends of the clamp, and the bed piece having a beveled lip adapted to engage and outwardly defleet one end of the clamp when driven against it by the closing movement of the have one end projected into; the recess in the hinged member in a direction substantially tangent to the circular recess formed when thebed piece and hinged member are forced together, said plunger having a beveled face on' said projecting end.
4. In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps, the'combination of a base plate, a bed'piece hinged thereto and normally tilted slightly upward therefrom, a hinged member mounted on the bed piece, said bed piece and hinged member being provided with registering semicircular recesses adapted to encircle the ring shaped clamp and one of said encircling members being also provided with a radial recess for receiving outwardly extending projections on the meeting ends of the clamp, a plunger mounted in the bed piece having one end resting on the before mentioned base plate, and the other projecting through the bed piece into theradial recess when the bed piece is forced down on the base, a movable stop for holding said bed piece in its slightly uptilted position. v
5. In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps,the combination of a said bed piece and hinged member being provided with registering semi-circular recesses adapted to encircle the ring shaped clamp and one of said encircling members being also provided with a radial recess for receiving outwardly extending projections on the meeting ends of the clamp, a plunger mounted in the bed piece having one end resting on the before mentioned base plate, and the other projecting through the bed piece into the radial recess when the bed piece is forced down on the base, and a movable stop for holding said bed piece in its slightly uptilted position, together with means for disengaging said stop and automatic means for returning it to its position of engagement.

In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps, the combination of a base plate, a bed piece hinged thereto and normally tilted slightly upward therefrom, a hinged member mounted on the bed piece, said bed piece and hinged member being provided with registering semicircular recesses adapted to encircle the ring shaped clamp and one of said encircling members being also provided with a radial recess for receiving outwardly extending projections on the meeting ends of the clamp, a plunger mounted in the bed piece having one end resting on the before mentioned base plate, and the other projecting through the bed piece into the radial recess when the bed piece is forced down on the base, and a movable stop for holding said bed piece in its slightly uptilted position, together with a hand lever connected to said stop and a spring normally tending to force said stop into the position of engagement.

In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps, the combination of a base plate, a bed piece hinged thereto and normally tilted slightly upward therefrom, a hinged member mounted on the bed piece, said bed piece and hinged member being provided with registering semicircular recesses adapted to encircle the ring shaped clamp and one of said encircling members being also provided with a radial recess for receiving outwardly extending projections on the meeting ends of the clamp, a plunger mounted in the bed piece having one end resting on the before mentioned base plate, and the other projecting through the bed piece into the radial recess when the bed piece is forced down on the base, and a movable stop for holding said bed piece in its slightly uptilted position, together with yielding means normally forcing said stop into engaging position, and locking means for holding it out of engagement adapted to be tripped by the downward movement of the hinged bed piece.

In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps the combination with a base plate, two semicircular jaws hinged to gether, the under one being also hinged to the base plate, one of said jaws having a radial recess for receiving interlocking projections from the closed clamp, of a plunger mounted in the lower jaw in line with said recess, projecting from the under side of the against the base plate, and a sprin normally forcing said plunger outwar whereby the hinged jaws are tilted upward.
9. In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped hose clamps the combination with a base plate, two semicircular jaws hinged together, the under one being also hinged to the base plate, one of said jaws having a radial recess for receiving interlocking projections from the closed clamp, of a plunger mounted in the lower jaw in line with said recess, projecting from the under side of the jaw against the base plate, and a spring normally forcing said plunger outward where by the hinged jaws are tilted upward, together with a stop limiting the outward movement of the plunger, the upper end of said plunger being flush with the under wall of the radial recess when its lower end is protruded by the spring to the maximum extent allowed by the stop.

The combination of a base plate, a member hinged thereto at one end, a stop mounted on the base plate and adapted to be inserted under the other end of the hinged member, a locking device for holding said stop out of engagement with the hinged member and means for tripping said locking device on the descent of the hinged member.
11. The combination of a base plate, a member hinged thereto at one end, a stop mounted on the base plate and adapted to be inserted under the other end of the hinged member, a locking device for holding said stop out of engagement with the hinged member and means for tripping said locking device on the descent of the hinged member, together with hand operated mechanism for withdrawing said stop, and automatic means iending to reinsert it under the hinged mem- 12. In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped clamps to tubular articles the combination of two semicircular jaws hinged together, one of said jaws being provided with a radial recess for receiving interlocking projections from the closed clamp and one of said jaws being provided with a plunger adapted to move in a line substantially tangent to the circular space formed when the jaws are forced together and engage a projecting end of the clamp to bend the same back upon itself.
13. In a mechanism for fastening ring shaped clamps to tubular articles the combination of two semicircular jaws hinged together, one of said jaws being provided with a radial recess for receiving interlockupturned lip adapted to engage and out-- fOfIIlGd When said jaws are so forced'rtogether, and bend the outwardly deflected end of the clamp back upon itself.
