Be it known that I, HENRY J. AVERBECK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Covington, county of Kenton, and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shapers.
An object of my invention. is to provide means for reducing the wear on the shaper ram and.the ram-ways, and for causing the movement of'the ram to be free and even.
A further object is a rocker arm of light and strong construction.
A further object is a rocker arm wherein means are provided for taking up the wear in the ways.
These and other objects are attained by the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring to the parts: column 8, with its longitudinal ram-ways, ram 9 and the driving mechanism 10 are of the usual construction and need not lie-specifically described. The rocker arm is pivoted at its upper end to the ram, is engaged by the actuating mechanism at points intermediate its ends, and at its lower end is pivoted to a lever 27, which is fulcrumed in the column upon a pin or fulcrum 26. and at the end opposite to the end to which the rocker arm is connected carries a counter-balance weight.

The rocker arm 11 has a longitudinal slot 12 provided with ways 13, between which the driving block 14 is adapted to reciprocate. The rocker arm is substantially of the form of an I-bea-m construction on each side of the slot 12. One rib 15 of I-beam 16 is longer than the other rib and, contains openings 17 and 18, through which bolts 19 and 20 are adapted to pass. The; corresponding rib 21 of I-beam 22 contains two threaded openings 23 and 24, which are adapted to receive the threaded ends of bolts 19 and 20. 'These bolts are for the purpose of taking up the wear between ways 13 and driving block 14. This I-beam construction gives a maximum strength with minimum weight. The adjustment bolts also increase the strength of the rocker arm. The rocker arm is bifurcated at its upper end. The ram adjustment block 29 fits between the members 30 and 31 of thebifurcated upper end, and is journaled upon a pin 32 secured within members 30 and 31.
The lever which connects the rocker arm to the column is in the form of a block or weight 25, with prongs or bifurcated arms 27 and 28, the bore 26 for the fulcrum 26, occurring at the junction of the arms 27 and 28 with the block 25. The ends of the arms 27 and 28 have registering perforations for the reception of the pin 33, which passes through the bore in the lower end of the rocker arm. Since the weight 25 counterbalances the weight of the rocker arm and ram upon the ram-ways, in all positions of the parts the movement of the ram in its ways is accompanied with a minimum amount of friction, and the change of 'di rection of the ram is accomplished with a minimum amount of jarring.
In operation: the'driving block 14: actuates the rocker arm, to give the slow forward and quick return motion as in ordinary construction, the lower end of the rocker arm having a slight up and down movement, as the ram approaches the end and middle of the stroke respectively. The upward and downward movement of the rocker arm oscillates weight 25 upon its bearing, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1. Having, described my invention what I claim is:
