l hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyinor drawings, which form part of this specihcation.
This invention is an improvement in metallic crates for transporting bottles of milk, beer, etc., and its object is to provide novel devices whereby when the crates are piled one on top of the other they will be kept from lateral or horizontal displacement. f
The invention consists in novel corner pieces attached to the bottom corners of the crates and which serve both as feet to support the crate when placed on a flat surface, and as means for locking the crates against lateral displacement when piled o-ne upon another.
I'will now describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which- I Figure 1 is a side view of two crates provided with my improved corner pieces, and piled one on top of the other. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the corner pieces enlarged. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fi 4 is a plan view. Fig. 5- is a side view o a slight modification. A
The crates l are preferably-rectangular and made of metal, and are provided with top stilfening bands or flanges l, and with handles 1b of any suitable kind. To the lower corners of each crate are secured novel corner pieces 2 which have two vertical side portionsl 2, at right angles 4to each other ladapted to fit against the end and side of the box at the corner thereof, and are secured thereto by rivets 3; I preferably use two rivets in each part 2El so as to securely fasten the corner pieces to the box. The parts 2a are providedwith outwardly proi jecting horizontal flanges 2", from which depend short vertical flanges 2. The corner pieces are preferably attached to the box in such manner that the underside of the bottom of the box, while the flanges 2 project belowthe box and form feet upon which the box will be upheld slightly above the surface upon which it is placed; as indicated by the lower box, Fig. 1. The foot portions 2*"l project slightly beyond the side and end walls of the box and are adapted to llt easily over the corners of the top liange 1a of an underlying box, when one box is placed on another, as indicated in Fig. 1, and will effectively prevent lateral or longitudinal movement of one box relative to the other when thus arranged.
In order to relieve the strain on the rivets 3 a web 2@ may be formed between the lower ends of the parts 2b as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4,-the web 2l being preferably flush with the flanges 2b. In some cases this web may be omitted as indicated in Fig. 5. It is obvious that by using such corner pieces the boxes can be made with vertical sides, as the bottom corner pieces of an upper box will engage the top corners of a lower box and keep the boxes'in proper relative position when piled one upon the other.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon is: j

In combination a metallic box, vwith corner pieces havin vertical portions extending at right ang es to each other adapted to fit the corner of a box, horizontally ,extending flanges at the lowerend of the vertical portions and short vertical pieces at the outer end of the horizontal flanges,-and' a web at the vlower' ends of the vertical porlations adjacent the horizontal flanges said web extending under the adjacent corner. of the box to su port the same.
2. In com ination 'with having` vertical sides and' flanged upper edge, of corner pieces having vertical side portions'v extendin at right angles to each other adapted to t the corner of `a box and be attached thereto by rivets, horizontally lextending flanges at the lower ends of these side portions, and short vertical pieces at the outer ends of the horizontalflangesfand a web adjacent the horizontal flanges flanges 2b are substantially flush with the a metallic box' as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
