ROLLER SPINNING-DISK FOR CRIMPING-MACI -IINES.
T0.aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO GE V. BEADLE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Roller and I do hereby declare the Spinning-Disks for anduse the same.
This invention relates to spinning disks for crimping in the ends of cartons such as is disclosed in my prior application No. 564,602, filed June 2nd, 1910, and entitled Crimping machines for cartons, and has for its object the improvement of. the construction of the prior disks, all as will appear more fully below;
To these ends the lnvention consists in the novelcornbinations of parts and details of construction more fully hereinafterdescribed and particularly pointedout in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals refer to like parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a plan'view of a roller spinning disk made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the invention taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the roller carrying disk alone.
plished.
ning operation is not so satisfactory as cou above,
As fully disclosed in the application the spinning those made the subject of said application, have a-motion lon itudinally of the axis of the carton whose edge isto be crimped, and they then have a rotary motion, during which the spinning operation is accom- It is found in practice that unless the material of the carton is first broken down or forced in atintervals around the circumference of the vessel,that the spip be desired.
In accordance with this invention the spinning disk 1 is provided with a plurality of rad'iallyldisposed rollers 2 mounted on brackets 3, and having a plurality of grooves 4, one inside the other, as shown. Throughan opening 5. in-the disk 1, passes a hub 6 of another disk 7, provided with radial slots8 to accommodate the rollers 2,

' as shown. The outer surface of the disk 7 is also preferably provided with concentric grooves 9 which register with the grooves 4 in the rollers 2 as will be readily understood. A spring 10 surrounds the hub 6 and is confined on said hub between the disk 1 and a plate 11 attached to said hub 6, sothat when pressure is brought upon the grooves 4 of the rollers, the said disk 1 will cause will contact with the edge of the cartonand force the same inwardly during the spinning operation. The tension of the spring is so adjusted that the rollers normally stand slightly abovethe disk 7 and therefore when the said disks 1 and 7 are given a movement longitudinally of the axis of the said rollers will bite into, break down or upset the material of the carton, at intervals around its circumference, whereupon pressure thus produced upon the spring 10 will cause the said rollers to recede through the disk 7 and .Will bring the spinning grooves 9 into intimate contact with the broken down edge of the carton. VVh'en the parts are in this position a rotary motion is imparted to the disks 1 and 7 and the edge of the carton is neatly and smoothly spun into the desired finished condition. 1
WhatI- claim is: 1. A spinning disk for carton crimping machines provided with a spinning groove adapted to crimpthe edge of a carton to the desired shape; means comprising a roller adapted/to break down the material of said edge prior to the crimping operation; and means for moving said disk and groove scribed. I
2. In a carton crimping machine, the combination of a spinning disk provided with a crimping groove and a plurality of radial in said slots; and means for moving said disk, groove and slots relatively to said rollers, substantially as described.
3. In a carton crimping machine, the combination of a spinnin disk provided with a crimping groove an a plurality of radial slots, a plurality-of grooved rollers located in said slots,
and resilient means adapted to move said I the spring to be compressed and the rollers will be forced down to the surface of the disk 7 sothat the grooves 9 carton prior to the spinning operation, the

4. In a carton crimping machine, the com In testimony whereof, I affix my signabination of a spinning disk provided with ture, in'presence of two Witnesses.
a hub a crimping groove and a plurality I of radially disposed slots; a second disk GEORGE BEADLE' mounted, on said hub and provided with a- Witnesses: plurality of rollers adapted to move in said J. H. GEWECK, slots, and a spring on said hub adapted" to J. HoUGHToN.
