Specification of Letters Patent.

y siding at 1Webb City, in the county of J asper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Roll Printer and j Holder, of which' the following is a specification.

This invention, which in its general nature relates to improvements in store service appliances, primarily has for its object to provide a neat, inexpensive and practical means for supporting a wrapping paper roll and printing and inking devices coperatively so combined therewith, whereby, when the paper is pulled olf the roll, it is printed at predetermined distances with the card or other advertisement of the seller.

My present invention also has for its object to provide an appliance of the character generally outlined having special provision for permittin of a quick setting or removal of theprintmg and inking devices.

With other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully explained, specically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, -in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention as set up for use. Fig. 2, is a transverse section thereof taken substantially on the line 2 2 on Fig. 1. Fig.- 3, is a top plan view thereof, parts being broken away to show the inking rolls; the hinged cover` for the printing drum or roller being swung back. Fig. 4, 1s a detail view of one end of the print-ino' rcller'shat, the parts of the casing'memlliers and one end of one of the pressure springs that engage the said shaft. Fig. 5, is a detail view of one end of the printing roller and the cap disks that cm operate therewith.

In'carrying out my invention, the paper roller and printing devices holder comprises the end standards 1 between which the roll of wrapping paper 3 is mounted in the usual manner, and which in practice has the usual type of tearing or cutter blade m.

The printing devices in my invention are normally held under spring tension to bring the type roller always in contact with the said paper roll, and in such a manner that as the wrapping portion of the paper roll is pulled oli the roll, it passes against and turns the printing cylinder or roller as 'the advertisement is being printed upon the paper.

The printing devices are mounted in a sheet metal casing 4 closed at the top, sides and one end, and the lower edges of the sides of the said casing are in a diagonal plane relatively to t-he paper roll, whereby to give the casing a substantially triangular shape, so its lower end is of suliicient depth to accommodate the printing cylinder or roller 8, presently again referred to.

The upper or small end of the casing is pivotally hung on a shaft- 5, the ends of which are mounted in the apertured ears 60, pendent from the front edge of a flat bracket 6 having notched side extensions 61 for fitting .over and gripping the front edge of a cross piece 7 mounted at its ends on the legs l-1.

Bracket 6 includes a pendent ear 62 that projects down over the front edge of the cross piece 7, and it carries a clamping screw 69 for engaging the member 7, as shown.

The upper end of the casing has a bottom or inside portion 30 that forms a guard for keeping dirt from readily getting on the inking rollers, presently mentioned, and preventing soiling of the hands during the operation of using the appliance.

This roller has longitudinal parallel grooves 81 in its peripheral face for quickly and conveniently inserting and removing the lines of type y, it being obvious that by arranging the rol l ers, as shown and stated, the type mattei' can be quickly changed, as conditions may require.

The roller has end journals 82 and these have right and left screw threads for receiving the removable caps or end plates 9 and the extreme outer ends of the said journais are smooth for seating in the elongated notch bearings in the casing sides.

That end of the casing 4, in which the printing roller is mounted is divided on a line across the bearings 35 whereby to form a hinged section 36, hinged at 37 and pro vided with a latch 37a for engaging a keeper 38 to hold the section 36 to its closed position.

The hinged'section when swung down, see Fig. 3, provides'for'ready removal and replacing of the printing roller. V.

A pair of tension arms l0 having coiled spring portions 1 1, mounted on the upper cross rods extend downwardly from the rod 5 and have loop ends 1l that tit over and engage grooves 85 in the journal ends of the shaft. i

The arms 10 hold the printing roller under tension against the paper roll and they also tend to hold the journals of the said printing rolls in their bearings.

To hold the loop ends in a proper engagement with the shaft journals, they extend between the meeting edges of the fixed and hinged side portions of the casing, see Fig. 4, one edge of each of the bearing notches in the hinged portion of the casing being -bent inwardly as at 39 to form guards for prevent-ing the loops jumping back out of a proper engagement with the roller jour-V nals.

The journals 17 of the inklng rollers ride in elongated slot bearings 38a in the casing sides. For easy access to the inking rollers the casing top has a hinged lid 45 normally closed by turn button 46.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the complete construction, the manner in which my invention is used and its advantages will be readilv apparent.v By reason of the con-- struction of the arts shown and explained in pulling off a plece of the wrapping paper, the rotation of the paper roll turns the printing roller which prints the 'advertisement and when the desired length of paper is pulled out the same is torn off on the cutting edge in the usual manner. Y

What I claim is:

1. The combination, with a paper roll holder frame, and a bracket that extends laterally from the holder frame; of an open bottom casing, pivotally suspended from the bracket, said casing including a hinged section at the lower end, the dividing edge of the stationary casing section having bearing seats, a printing roller having journals for engaging the said seats, arms held under spring tension that engage the journals to hold them -to their seats and the printing roller against the paper roll, and inking rollers mounted in the casing for engaging each other and with the printing roller.

2. The combination with a paper roll holder frame, and a bracket that extends laterally .from the holder frame; of an open bottom casing, pivotally suspended from the bracket, said casing including al hinged section at the lower end," the dividing edge of the stationary casing section havving bearing seats, a printing roller having journals for engaging the said seats, arms Aheld under spring tension and having loop ends for engaging the journals to hold them to their seats and the printing roller against the paper roll, and inking rollers mounted in the casing for engaging eachother and Vwith the printing roller.

13. The combination with a .paper roll holder frame, and a vbracket thatV extends laterally from the holder frame; of an open bottom casing, pivotally suspended from the bracket, said casing including a hinged section at the lower end, the dividing edge of the stationary casing section having bearing seats, a printing roller having journals for engaging the said seats, arms held junder spring tension and havingv loop ends that extend between the adjacent side portions lof the stationary and hinged casing members,
