UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST PHILIPPS, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK- FUR'IER MUSIKWERKE-FABRIK J. D. PHILIPPS & SGHNE'AKT. GES., OF FRANK- FORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
PIANO-VIOLIN.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST PI-IILIPPS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and residing at Solmsstrasse 9, in Frankfort-on-the- Main, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Violins, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple form of operating means for transmitting a reciprocal motion to the bow of mechanical string instruments.
The drawing represents one form of construction, in. which:
Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the bow and its operating means.
In the form of construction shown in the drawing it is assumed, that the strings are pressed against the bow, however the sub ject matter of the invention may be employed with the same success, if the arrangement is reversed.
In the drawing (1 indicates the resonance body, which is provided with the strings b, and 0 indicates a bow provided with bow hairs g and arranged above the resonance body and provided with a guide (1 for the operating or driving roller 6. The guide (2 consists of an upper operating rail f and. a lower operating rail 9, between which the roller 6 is arranged in such a manner that it can engage the upper or the lower rail. The roller itself is mounted on the movable arm It of a jointed shaft 2'. This movable shaft arm in is adapted to be influenced by two pneumatic levers 7c, k which corresponding to the direction in which they are operated, move the free end of said arm either upwardly or downwardly and thereby press the roller 0 which always rotates in the same direction, either against the upper operating rail f or the lower operating rail 9. In accordance with the engagement of the operat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing or driving roller 6 with the upper 01' lower guide rail, the bow is moved forwardly or rearwardly. The bow proper is mounted on guiding means in the form of rollers Z, Z
The strings Z) can be moved toward the bow c in any desired manner, a pneumatic device a being shown as one form of means and also group arrangements and combinations of the described devices for larger instruments can be easily obtained in any known manner.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a string musical instrument and a bow therefor, of a plurality of operating rails for the bow, guiding means for the bow, and a driven roller engaging said rails to operate the bow.
2. The combination wlth a string musical instrument and a bow therefor, of a plurality of operating rails for the bow, guiding means for the bow, a driven roller engaging said rails to operate the bow, and means for moving the roller into and out of engagement with said rails, substantially described.
3. The combination with a string musical. instrument and a bow therefor, of a plurality of operating rails for the bow, guiding means for the bow, a jointed shaft adapted to be driven in one direction, a roller on said shaft, and means engaging said shaft to move said roller into and out of engagement with said rails, substantially described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST PHILIPPS.
Witnesses JEAN GRUND, CARL GRUND.
