To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. LAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Buckets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany-- ing drawing.
This invention relates to elevator buckets, and the principal object of the same is to produce a bucket so constructed that dirt or other substance carried by the bucket will very readily drop out when the bucket is inverted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bucket which is formed from a single piece of material and to so shape the blank from which the bucket is made that when the bucket is completely formed the ends of the same will be of double thickness, thus giving the portion of the bucket which receives the most strain a reinforcement.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved bucket. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through the bucket. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section through the bucket. Fig. i is a view of the blank from which the bucket is made.
This bucket is rectangular in shape and has a rear wall 1, a front wall 2, a curved bottom 3 and double end walls 4 and 5.
This bucket is formed from a blank which comprises a rectangular body portion provided with transversely extending creases 6 and 7 which divide the body portion so that it can be folded to form the rear wall 1, the bottom 3 and front wall 2. Reinforcing tongues 8 and 9 extend from each end of the central portion of the blank which forms the bottom 3 and are used to brace the bot tom portions of the end walls as will be hereinafter brought out. Similarly construct-ed wings 10-10 and 1111 extend from each end of the rear wall 1 and the front wall :2. Each of the wings 10 has a sloping edge 12 which forms the upper edge of the end wall and a second sloping edge 13 which forms the front edge of the end wall. A curved edge 14 is formed so as to cause the bottom of the bucket to be curved. Each of the wings 11 has a straight edge 15 which forms the upper edge of the second section of the end wall and a sloping edge 16 which rests against the rear wall of the bucket. The w1ng1s also provided with a curved edge 17 so as to conform to the curvature of the bot tom of the bucket. Each of the wings is provided with openings 18 positioned adjacent the edges and with centrally located openmgs 19. These openings are so positioned that when the blank is folded to form the bucket the openings in the wings will register.
In forming this bucket the blank is folded along the creases 20 and 21 and is then folded along the creases 6 and 7 so that the wings 11 will be brought within the wings 10 and tongues 8 and 9 and against the rear wall 1. Rivets 22 are passed through the openings 18 and hold the bucket in the set up position. If desired bail cars can be secured to the end walls by passing rivets through the openings 19 or if desired hooks may be secured in the openings. The tongues 8 and 9 brace the bottom and lower portions of the end walls and the double end walls give the bucket a great deal more strength as the principal part of the strain comes upon the end walls.
When emptying this bucket it is tipped forwardly and the contents of the bucket empties very easily as the sloping front wall 2 causes as small amount of resistance as possible, and the curved bottom prevents any danger of the contents sticking in the corners as would be the case if a sharp corner were formed at the junction of the front and rear walls with the bottom.
What I claim as my invention is z- 1. A bucket formed from a single blank, said blank comprising a main body portion constituting when folded the bottom and two sides of the bucket, those portions of the body constituting the sides provided at their opposite edges respectively with similarly shaped wings, said wings being of a width and height substantially equal to the width and height of the finished bucket, said wings overlapping to form end walls of double thickness throughout substantially the entire area of the ends of the bucket and said wings having registering openings at their opposite edges, and fastening means passing through said registering openings.
2. A bucket formed from a single blank, said blank comprisinga main body portion constituting when folded the bottom and two sides of the bucket, those portions of the body constituting the sides provided at their opposite edges respectively with similarly shaped wings, said wings bem'g'of a width and height substantiallyequal to the width and height of the finished bucket,
said wings overlapping to form end'walls openings, that portion of'th body of the blank constituting the bottom of the bucket having relatively narrow tongues folded about the lower edges of the overlapping wings at the ends of the bucket. 7
