1' New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and more particularly to that type of lock which can be manipulated at one side of the door only in such manner as to hold the lock against operation. f
One of the objects of the invention yis the production of an inexoensive durable lock with the fewest possible parts, and capable of being manufactured with the least amount of machine and hand fitting.
Another object is to produce a lock adapted for use in any position, which can be the use of a key or extra latch.
A further object is the production of a lock of this general character wherein the locking part is held against misplacement, either in operative or inoperative position.
The invention consists 1n the parts, imgrovements and combinations' hereinafter escribed and claimed for accomplishing these objects.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention and are hereby made a part of this specification, Figure .1 is a partial central plan section of the invention; Fig. 2 is a front view of the lock shown in Fig. 1, parts being omitted; Fig.. A3 is a rear view of Fig. 2 with the back wall cut away and some of the parts in achanged position; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the. direction of the ar rows; and Fig. 5 is a section o n the line 5-5 of Fig. 2 looklng in the dlrection of the arrows.
casing is set into the door 14 in any suitable or usual manner, and handles 15, 15a are provided at opposite sides of the door.
These handles are secured to square stemsl 16, 16'* as by means of screws 17, and thestems are secured together so 'as to be capable of independent rotation by means o a threaded extension 18 on one stem taking into a socket screw thread in the other stem. The engagement vbetween the extension and socket screw threads is loose and the end movement resulting from relative turning of the stems is unimportant.
The stems project through openings in the back wall and cover plate of the casing, and hubs 19, 19 journaled in this wall and plate are secured direct-ly on the stems inside the casing. A single arm lever 20 is formed on the hub 19 and double-arm lever 21 is formed on the hub 19a. i
' The bolt 13 has a yoke 22 formed thereon atts rear end. This yoke is shown as a substantially rectangular or oblong frame extending above and below the bolt. The levers 20 and 21 are located within this yoke. The relation of the single-arm lever 2O to the oke is such that when turned in one direction by its handle, itA engages with i the forward inner wall of the yoke, so as to constitute a thrust member barring or locking the bolt in thrown-or projected osition against retraction. But when t is lever is turned in the opposite direction by means of its handle, it engages with the back inner wall of the yoke so as to retract the bolt.` The yoke is provided centrally of its front inner wall with a projection or stop 23, which preventsthe lever being turned past locking or approximately horizontal position. In order that the handle 15, which operates this lever', may be turned in the desired direction, that is, with the nose of the lever 20 below the stop 23, to lock or retract the bolt; irrespective of the position of lthe lock With reference to the door, the lever 2O is reversible on the eol stem-16, so that it may operate at either side of the stop 23. .This is accomplished by slipping the `hub 1.9 and arm 20 oii" the square stem, reversing the lever and replacing it. The path of the lever 20 in either direction is indicated by the dash- -and-dot line 30. 4
The double arm lever 21 is so related to the yoke that it is incapable of locking the bolt, but one arm or the other will enga e with the back Wall of the yoke when t e' handle 15 is turned in either direction, so as to retract the bolt` A vertical plate 24 is located Iat the side of the yoke 22, with its rear edge A25 adjay ner wall ofthe yoke,
centbut partially ,in rear of the front inin order to prevent the latter from traveling plate. As shown, this edge of the plate 24 is formed so as to afford inclined edges or surfaces intersecting the path of the arm'20 to and from locking position, so that the movement of the arm necessitates the displacement of the plate. The latter is pivot-V ed on one screw 12 and has a lug 26 which contacts with the other screw 12a as a vlimit stop. A single coil spring 27 is interposed between an offset seat 28 on the bolt and a seat- 29 on the plate 24. This spring acts both to project the bolt and to press the plate 24 against the lower stop screw 12a in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In operation, the bolt may be locked in thrown position at one side of the door only, by means of the handle 15 and the single arm lever 20. This handle and lever alsov enable the bolt to be retracted, at the other side of the door, the bolt may be retracted, when it is not locked by the single arm lever 20, by means of the handle 15 and the double arm lever 21. Movement of the handle 15a in either direction will accomplish this result, but will not lock the bolt. The spring-pressed platel 24 acts as yielding detent, over which the arm 20 must ride in order to reach or leave the locking position shown in Fi 2. The plate is so formed that it yieldingly holds the lever 2O either in or out of locking position, as the case ma7 be, so that accident-al displacement of the ever is revented.
I-Iaving descri ed m invention what I desire to secure by tters Iatent and claim is:
1. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, a spring for throwing the same, handles at opposite sides of the lock having independently rotatable stems, a single arm lever on one of said stems constructed and arranged to directly hold the bolt in locked position when its stem is turned in one direction and also to retract the bolt when its stem is turned in the opposite direction, and a double arm lever on the other stem constructed and arrangedto retract the bolt when said stem is turned in either direction, but incapable of locking the bolt.
2. In a lock, the combination of a bolt having a yoke, handles at opposite sides of the lock having independently rotatable stems, an arm on one of said stems located within they yokeyand constructed and arranged to engage with the front of the yoke to t row and directl hold the bolt in ylocked position and with t e back of the yoke to retract the bolt, and a double arm lever on the other stem alsolocated within said oke and adapted to engage with the back o the yoke when its stem is turned in either direction to retract the bolt.
