Letters Patent No. 103,846, dated June 7, 1870.

IMPROVEMENTIN BUGGY-TOP BEDS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, A.MORRELL CORY, M. D., of New Providence, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improvement in Vehicle-top Beds, of which the following is a specification.

Adjustable Bell for Vehicle Toys.

The object of this invention is to provide a bed for the vehicle top which shall at once secure the requisite adjustability and individuality of form, with a minimum amount of labor and material.

The members required are- The bars B B.

. The bolt K, or its equivalent. The panel or lazy-back I.

I take the bars B B, of suflicieut length to receive at their forward termini, in permanent connection, the braces I) D, and the bow-arms or pivots A A, as at E E, while they at the same time afford support at their rear termini to the lazy-back I, one of them being offset, as shown, or otherwise suitably made, so that one bar may pass under the other withontinterfering, the oifst being sufficiently long that any variation of size may be made which the different-sized vehicles may require.

These bars B B are carried diagonally across the seat, and bent up as the shape may demand, to support the lower edge of the lazy-back, as shown at O C.

At the junction or crossing of the bars a bolt or other suitable fastening is used to form an attachment between them when they are properlyadjusted.

To the forward ends of the bars the bow-arms or pivots A A are attached, as at E E. s

From or near the point of union between the bars 13 B and arms A A, I carry the braces D D, as at E E, to the lazy-back, to which they are secured, supporting its upper edge.

These braces may also have branches running to the arms and to a lower point of the lazy-back, respectively, constituting arm-rests as well-as braces.

It is intended to attach the brace at such a point of the bar as to form a broad base for the bow-arm and keep it from rocking, and give it (the brace) an unyielding foothold near the fastening, by which the bed or top may be heldto the seat of the vehicle.

The lazy-back may be a single panel or composed of several pieces.

If it be desired to have what is called a shifting top, the bars 13 B can be slipped under hooks G G, at the rear of the bed or seat, and the front of the bed can be secured to the scat by'bolts or thumb-screws inserted at any suitable point of the bars or arms, as at H H. By removing these bolts the bed or top may he slipped forward and removed from the vehicle at pleasure.

Claims.

I do not claim to be the first inventor of beds for vehicle tops; I do not claim the bow-arms or pivots in common use, nor the braces, nor the lazy-back as commonly attached; but

I claim as my invention- 1. The bars B B, of suflicient length that they may cross the seat diagonally, and receive at their rear termini the lazy-back I, and at their forward termini receive the braces D D and the arms A A in firm attachment, as at E E, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.

2. The braces D D, to be used in the combination constituting this adjustable bed, their forward attachment to be made to or near the forward ends of the bars B B, as at E E, their rear attachment to be made to the lazy-back at any desirable point for stability and neatness, with one or more branches to the arms A A and the lazy-back, substantially as and for the purposes herein described. 7

3. The bolt K, or its equivalent, by which union, more or less permanent, is effected between the bars B B at their junction or crossing, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.

4. The lazy-back I, by which the several members are retained in connection in this combination, sub stantially as and for the purposes herein described.
