To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM '1. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Vacuum-Cleaners; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brushes for vacuum cleaners and it has for its object the provision of brushes disposed upon opposite sides of the vacuum slot, the brushes being adapted to be automatically raised or lowered so as to cause one or the other brush to contact with the floor as needed, while the brush upon the op ositeside is. raised out of engagement wit the floor so as not to afford an obstruction to the passage of dust through the vacuum slot.

To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction andin the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

The inventionis clearly illustrated in the accompanying I drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vacuum cleaner constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 represents the suction head of a vacuum cleaner provided with the usual vacuum slot 2 and socket member 3 for attachment of the handle.

Suitably mounted upon opposite sides of the vacuum slot 2 are brushes i, d, the said brushes extending the entire length of the suction head and adapted to be moved vertically within

The brushes 4, 4 are carried by the lower ends of arms 6 which, at their upper ends, are pivotally connected to the suction head the said cross head is pivoted at its longitudinal center at 8 and at the lower end the arm 9 is provided with teeth 10 adapted to mesh with a pinion 11. Said pinions 11 are fastened one to each wheel 17 which are journaled upon stub shafts 18 fastened to the opposite ends of the head.

, From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be understood and is as follows :-As the operator pushes the device forward, the wheels 17 will be ro tate'd and, as the teeth upon the lower ends 7 of the arms 9 of the cross heads are in mesh with the pinions which rotate with the wheels, will cause the said cross heads to tilt upon their pivots, thus throwing down the brush toward the handle or at the rear "of the vacuum head,

will be raised from contact with the surface against which the wheels contact. In the event of the head being moved backward,

It will be noted that, by pulling back the handle in the opposite direction, the position of' the brushes will be reversed so that the brush traveling in the rear of the vacuum slot will at all times be in contact with the surface being swept ,while the brush in advance of the slot will at all times be free.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A vacuum cleaner comprising a suction head having an elongated slot at the bottom thereof, brushes mounted one on each side of said slot, T-shaped levers pivoted to said head, connections between the same and said brushes, and means for tilting said levers to actuate the brushes as the cleaner is moved backward or forward, as set forth.
