CLOTHES-WRINGER.
dpecification of hetters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application filed July 14, 1911. Serial No. 638,459.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoNAH DAVIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Clothes W ringers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes wringers, and has for an objectto provide means insuring accuracy of adjustment of the pressure roller so as to equalize the tension of the same against the driven roller of the wringer.
Another object of the invention is to providean improved frame structure whereby the driven roller and the pressure roller can be readily associated therewith.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a front view of the wringer. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 41% of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the wear plates.
The wringer includes a ,frame which is constructed preferably of the vertical spaced side members 1 which are provided with lower attaching portions 2 to be secured to any suitable washing apparatus, (not shown). The members 1 are provided with vertical slots 3 which are open at their upper ends, as shown. These members are connected together at their upper ends by the connecting bearing bar 4, and at the lower ends, the-side members are connected by the combined guard and guiding plates 5 and 6. The side members may be constructed of wood or metal, it being desirable when the members are constructed of wood to provide the vertical bearing or wear plates 7 which are secured to the side members by the fas tening devices 8. The plates 7 are provided with vertical slots 9 which are arranged in registration with the slots 3 to receive therewith the ends of the driving shaft 10 on the driving roller 11 and the trunnions 12 on.
the pressure rollers13.
The rollers may be of any suitable well known construction and each is provided with an outer surfacefl of galvanized metal 14. The ends of the shaft 10 are-extended through stationary bushings 15 which extend through the slots 3 at the lower ends thereof. The top bar 4 is provided with a depending rib 16 which extends into the upper portions of the vertical slots to firmly hold the upper bar. Fastening bolts 17 are extended through the vertical members 1 and through the de ending rib 1.6 on the upper bar 4 of the t i'ame. The guard members 5 and 6 are secured to the vertical members 1 by the fastening devices 18. The tension member 19 of the wringer is disposed above the pressure roller 13, and as illustrated, said member is provided with reduced end portions 20 which are apertured vertically, at 21, to receive the stems 22 of the boxes 23. Theselboxesare slidable in the vertical slots 3 in=the side members 1 of the frame and interpdsed between the boxes and the said reduced 'ends 20 of the tension member 19 are relatively strong helical compressible springs 24. The tension member 19 is provided with a metallic step bearing 25 against which the lower end of the adjusting screw 26 is engaged. This screw extends through the top bar 4 of the frame of the wringer and is threadedly mounted in the nut 27. This nut is countersunk in the rib l6 and is'securely held in the countersunk portion by means of the apertured retaining plate 28 which is secured tothe underside of the rib 16. The adjusting screw is provided at its upper end with the usual hand wheel 30 which may be operated manually when it is desired to move the tension member 19 for the purpose of obtaining the required pressure of the pressure roller against the driving roller.
The member 5 extends upwardly at an angle in the direction of the effective contact surfaces of the rollers 11 and 13 so as to guide the clothes directly into said surfaces. To prevent the clothes from becoming accidentally caught in the ends of the rollers and thereby accidentally wound around the shafts of the rollers, I provide the vertical guards 32. These guards are secured to the inner sides of the vertical members 1 and extend substantially the full length of said members. The shaft 10 of the driving roller has secured thereto a gear wheel 33 and a combined driving pulley and balance wheel 34, the latter being. adapted to receive its power from any suitable well known form of driving motor, (not shown), or it may, if desired, be belted or otherwise operatively connected to some driven part of a washing coming accidentally caught in the gears when the clothes are fed t0 the rollers. By permitting the stems 24 of the boxes to extend through the reduced ends 20 of'the tension member 19 equal tension ofthe pressure springs canbe effectively obtained so as to effect the required pressureof the roller 13 against the roller 11. The guard 6 of the wringer is disposed below the plane of the effective contacting surfaces of the rollers 11 and 13 so as to provide for a free discharge of the clothes during the wringing operation.
The balance wheel 34: is provided with a handle 37, whereby the wringer can be readily operated manually if desired. By roviding the r Here 11 and 13 with the galvanized meta surfaces 14: said rollers may be effectively used for pressing or smoothing the clothes.
I claim I A clothes wringer, comprising a frame including side members having vertical slots therein which open toward the upper ends of the members, metallic wear plates secured to the said side members and partially closing the slots in the side members at one side of the said members, the said wear plates having vertical slots therein, a driving roller,
bearings seated against the lower Walls of the said vertical slots and supporting the said driving roller, a driven roller disposed above the driving roller and provided with boxes adapted to bear against the trunnions of the said driven roller, a tensioning member disposed above the boxes, the said tensioning member having reduced end portions extending into the slots of the said vertical side members, andsaid reduced ends being arranged in sliding contact" with the said wear plates, stems carried by the boxes and slidably mounted in the tensionin member, springs encircling the stems and interposed between the boxes and the said reduced ends of the said tensioning member, a bearing bar extending across the upper end of the frame and having 'a depending rib extending partly into the said guide slots in the vertical side members of the frame, means extending through the side members and through the rib to hold the said bearing bar operatively mounted on the frame, and means extending through the said bearing bar and operatively connected withthe tensionin member so as to move the same and the said boxes relatively to govern the ten-
