Description

GEORGE WEITZEL, OF CHICAGO, ILL1NOIS WAGON-BOX.
Specificatoxi of. Letters Patent. Pajented S91313. 10;1912.
Application filed April 10,. 1912. Seia1 No. 689,797.
T0 aZZ whom z'L may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WEITZEL, a citizen of the United States of A1nerica and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, State of 111inois, have invented oertainnew and usefu1 Improve1nents in Wagon-Bxes, of which the following is a speoification.
The main object-s ofths invention are to provide an rnproved form of vehio1e body, the parts of whioh may be easily and C011V611 iently shifted t0 positions that will facilitate the unloading of the body; to provide an i1nproved mountng and arrangement of the sides of a wagon body whereby they are adapted to be shifted c1ear of the bottom of the body; to provide i1nproved means for counterweighting the sides; and to provide improved means for securing the parts of the body in their nor1nal positions.
An illustrative embodirnent of this invention is shown in the aeoompanying drawing, Whioh is a perspective view of a vehicle body oonstrueted aocording to this' invention showing the end 1nember swung downwardly and one of the sides shifted to a vertical position.
In the eonstruction shown in the drawings, the body member oornprises the bottom rnember 1, end 1ne1nbers 2 and 3 and side 1nembers 4. The end member 2 is rigid on the bottom me1nber 1 and is adapted to sup port a seat (not shown) in the usua1 manner. The end gate 8 is hinged on a horizontally disposed axis 6 in the usna1 1nanner at the rear of the bottonn member 1.
The bottorn n1ember 1 and the side members 4 have respectively secured thereto the fittings 7 and 8 which are pivotally connected together on horizontally disposed axes 9 adjacent to the forvvard end of the side and bottorn 1nernbers, whereby either or both o the sde 1nembers4 may be swung from a whioh are adapted to have interfitting en gagement, When the side nembers are in their lowered or normal position, for securing the same against transverse shifting or displacement. Means are provided for se ouring the end 1ne1nbers and side me1nbers together in their normal positions on the bottom 1nember which are herein shown in the form of hooks 14, whoh are adapted to be reeeived in the eyes 15.
The operation of. the device shown is as follows: Normally the end members 2 and 3 and the side members 4 rest upon the bottom 1nember 1 in the form of a box and are secnred in.suoh positions by means of the hooks 14 and eyes 15, the side members be ing pre"ented from transverse shfting on the bottom member 1 through the engagement of the dowe1 pins 12 in the notches 13. With the parts in this position, the body may be 1oaded in any manner that may be desired. When it is desired to un1oad the body, the hoks l4may be disengaged from the eyes 15 and theend 1ne1nber 3 dropped down and one or both of the side mernbers 4 elevated, being swung upwardly on the axes 9 to a vertieal postion. The oounterweights 10 render the elevating of the sides easy and ooaot with the guides 11 in insurng the proper.elevation of the sides, and also in holding the sides in their vert-ioal positons. The contents of the body 1nay then be rernoved in any manner that may be conven ient as determined by the nature of the oon tents. After unloading the body the side 1nembers 4 and end mernber 3 are again shifted to their normal positions and loeked.
Although but one specifio embodirnent of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be nnderstood that nomerous details of the construct-ion shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a wagon box, the oonnbination of a bottom member, a pair of side 1nernbers hinged to said bottorn me1nber on horizonta1ly disposed axes looated adjacent to the lower corner atone end thereof, and adapted to be swung in their own p1anes substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a vehcle body, the combnation of a bottom member, a pair of sde members hnged 1:0 sad bottom member on horizonta1ly disposed axes located adjacent to the forward ends thereof, and adapted to be s wung in their own planes, and gudes arranged so as to nsure the proper swngng of sad sde members substantally as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a vehic1e body, the combinaton of a bottom member, a pair of sde members hnged to sad bottom member on horizont-a11y disposed axes located adjacent to the forward ends thereof, and adapted to be swung in ther own planes and gudes arranged adjacent to the axes of sad hinges so as to nsure the proper swngng of said sde memb ers substantially as and i"01 the purpose specified.
GEORGE WEITZEL.
