My invention relates to dumping cars, and more particularly relates to side dumping cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a car construction having improved means for discharging materials loaded therein and having novel mechanism for operating the car in dumping.
Another object of the inventionis to provide improved means for guiding and controlling the lifting parts of the car during the dumping operation.
In the drawings, 2 represents the bottom of the car which is of the ordinary construction, and is provided with any suitable type of car trucks and Wheels. The
longitudinal sills 3 of the car are connected 7 into the end sills 3 in the usual manner,
and the cars are provided with any well known type of draft rigging and couplers.
The car is provided with the usual equip ment of air brakes, hand brake and similar equipment, which not forming part of my invention need not further be described. The bottom plates 4 of the car are inclined upwardly from each side of the car and meet, at a considerable distance above the lower edge of the bottom of the car so as to form a sloping bottom from the longitudinal center of the car toward each side. Surrounding the car bottom are the vertically movable sides 5 and ends 6. The lower edges of the. bottom plates 4 are provided at suitable points with hooks 7 which engage with and hold the lower edge of the at. sends of the cars on rising lift the sides and bottom,

The end plates 6 are fixedly secured to the stationary bottom portions of the car 2, and the end plates 6 which move vertically with the side plates are provided at the top with the depending portion 6 which overlap the stationary end plates 6* so as to prevent the entrance of materials into the space between the plates 6 and 6" when loading the car. Mounted on the end sills of the cars is a plurality of fluid pressure cylinders 14 having pistons, which are connected by the piston rods 15 with the end plates 6 of the: car for a purpose described later. Beneath the sloping bottom of the car is a fluid pressure storage tank 16, which is connected by a suitable piping 1'7 with each of the cylinders 14. The tank 16 is also provided with a supply pressure pipe 18 which is connected to the locomotive or other suitable source of fluid preisure supply in charging the storage tan In the operation of my improved dumping car, the car is loaded with materials in any desired manner.
