To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHAN SIGISMUND FASTING, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Vodrofi'plads 8, in Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improve- PQIliS in Apparatus for Filling Bags with Cement, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved apparatus for the rapid filling of bags or other receptacles with cement or other finely divided substances which are capable of being moved by pneumatic preshereof.
The improved apparatus comprises a chamber, in which is suspended the bag to be filled, means to maintain a relatively high vacuum in such chamber, and a suitable tube or pipe through which, under atmospheric pressure, the cement or other finely divided material is conducted from the bin or other storage place to the bag. In order that the operation may be conducted rapidly, it is also desirable to provide ,means operated by the weight of the filled bag to control the exhaustion of air from the chamber.
The invention will be more fully explained hereafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated a view in section, showing one form of the apparatus with devices for controlling the vacuum.
In the arrangement shown in the drawing the bag to be filled, 31, is suspended as hereinafter described within the chamber 32 which is provided with a door 33 and is connected through a pipe 34 and hose 35 with the vacuum pump shown) and by the hose 36 with the bin in which is contained the material to be bagged. The hose 36 terminates in a cap 41 about which the mouth of the bag 31 may be secured and the cap is suspended by a link 42from a hooked valve rod 43 which moves freely in a vertical direction and is suspended upon one arm of a scale beam 37, to the other arm of which may be applied .a weight which will counter-balance the weight of the ring and its contents until the bag is filled to the desired degree, when the arm of the scale beam which supports the bag will descend.
(which need not be At the upper end of the tube 34 is a valve chamber 44,- which has an upwardly opening valve seat 45 communicating with the hose 35 and a downwardly opening valve seat 46 which communicates with. the atmosphere. At its lower end the rod 43 passes freely through a cap 47 on the top of the chamber 32, a valve seat being formed on the underside of such cap. The rod 43 carries a valve 40 to coiiperate with the valve seat on the underside of the cap 47, a valve 38 to cooperate with the valve seat 46 on the underside of the valve chamber 44 and a valve 39 to cooperate with the valve seat 45 within the chamber 44. The valves -10 and 38 are seated against their respective valve seats until the bag descends when full and therefore keep the chamber 32 closed against atmospheric pressure until the bag is filled, while the valve 39 is "free from its seat, permitting communication to be maintained between the air pump and the chamber 32, until the bag descends. The two valves 40 and 38 are subject to the pressure of the atmosphere in opposite directions so that the action of atmospheric pressure on the scale beam, during the operation of filling the bag, is eliminated. As soon as the bag is filled completely it descends, and, through the valve 39, shuts off communication between the chamber 32 and the air pump, and admits atmospheric pressure to such chamber, thereby indicating to the attendant that the bag has been filled to the desired extent and at the sametime preventing the further operation of the apparatus, until the chamher is opened and the filled bag removed and replaced by another bag, the scale beam being held down by hand after the filled bag is removed and while the empty bag is being replaced and the chamber 32 closed.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other structures than that shown and described herein, according to the nature of the material to be bagged and other special requirements and is not rest-ricted to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention:
1. An apparatus for filling bags etc, comprising a chamber adapted to have the receptacle to be filled suspended therein, means to produce a vacuum in said chamber, a pipe to conduct the material from the supply to Ill) said receptacle, and means operated by the mospheric pressure to the chamber, and
means operated by the Weight of the bag- When filled to close the connection to the Vacuum producing means. Q 7

An apparatus for filling bags etc, comprising a chamber, a scale beam from which the receptacle to be filled is suspended v vithin. the chamber, means to produce a yacuum in said chamber, a pipe to conduct the material from the supply to said receptacle and means connected with said scale-beam adapted to admit atmospheric pressure to said chamber when the material in the receptaclc attains a predetermined Weight.
4;. An apparatus for filling bags etc, com prising a chamber, a scale beam from which the receptacle to be filled is suspended within the chamber, means to produce a vacuum in said chamber,-a pipe to conduct the material from the supply to said receptacle, and ayalve controlling the admission of atmospheric pressure to the chamber and 0perated by the scale beam.
5'. An apparatus for filling bags etc, comprising a chamber, a scale beam mounted upon said chamber, a rod suspended from the scale beam and passing into the chamber and adapted to support thereceptacle to be filled, means to produce a vacuum in said chamber, and a pipe to conduct the material from the supply to said receptacle and means connected with said scale-beam adapted to admit atmospheric pressure to said chamber when the material in the re ceptacle attalns a; predetermined Weight.
