ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Application filed .Tune 20, 1911v Serial No. 634,243.
To c/ZZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, SoLoMoN Hoor., a citizen 'ot the. United States, residing 'at llvayuesburg, in the count;7 ot Greene Aand tatate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Alarms, ci which the following is a speciiication.
Oneobject ot the invention is to increase the cdicicncy ot alarms for incubators, drippans, boilers and the like, by providing contact members adjustable with respect to each other and the circuit closer, wherebiT the alarm circuit may be regulated to close at various predetermined conditions ot the operating agent in the incubator, driiji-pan,
boiler orthe like.
(')ther objects will appear and be better' understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which, y
vFigure l is a side elevation ot the device as 'applied to the incubator. Fig. 2 is a de tail front elevation of the contact members partly in section. v
For purposes of illustration I have shown the device applied to a well-known form of incubator. It is to be understood however, that I am netto be limited to this specific application, sinceit will be understood from what will appear later how the device may bc. equallyY as well applied to other' dei'ices wherein an alarm is usuallyv emploli'ed such as refrigerators, drippans, steam boilers and the like.
thermostat 5 is arranged adjacent to the top G ot the incubator casing 7 supporting means for the thermostat being herein n operating rod 9 connects at one end with the thermostat and its upper end underlies anadjusting screw l0 extending through a circuit closer ll having a cross-piece or rock shaft 12 bearing in the upright sides 13 of a support lei. The rock shaft l2 is arranged to one side of the middle ot the cirv cuit closer so that the latter is normalliv over-balanced, but in order to compensate for the excess weight ot' the longer arm and whatever'additional weight may be applied thereto as will be subsequentlyv described, a sliding weight l5 is provided on the shorter arm of the circuit closer.
The longer arm ot the circuit closer eX- sist of a U-shaped piece ot' metal the limbs 18 ot which. are exteriorly screw threaded and slide through vertical openings in an angular-shape bracket arm 19 carried by the upright portion Q0 oi" asupport 21 which is suitably secured to an insulatingr block 4f, suitablyY secured tothe top G.
Referring tolIiig. it will bc seen that the Contact arms are otdilierent widths and are arranged in vertical' alinement and one within the other and-in spaced relation.
For adjusting the arms lo and IT with re The alarm circuit; extends by a wire Q3 l from a. suitable source of electric energy' to the circuit closerll, Vthe said wire 23 being 'suitably secured to the end 4ot the longer arm ot th'e circuit closer. )c conducting wire Q- t connected t'o the other pole ot the battery 'or other source ot electric energy extends to one pole ot a suitable alarmy herein shown to consist ot an'audiblc signal v such as a bell 2G, a conducting wire '27 connects at one end with the other binding post of the bell and at ltsopposlte end connects with a binding post carried bythe bracket arm 19. p
The circuit cioser in its normal position is spaced from the horizontal portions ot the contact arms lo and 1T and is-held against downward movement on the lower circuit closer by the operating rod 9 one end oit whichbears on the lower end of the adjust-ing screw l0. lilith this construction it will be seen that the rise of temperature in the incubator will cause the operating rod to more upwardltY to said screw carrying ;with it the circuit closer until the latter conure will be required to operate the circuit closer so as to Contact with the upper contact arm.
lt Will of course be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the specific use of a theiiiiostet for operating the eifcuit closet silice it will be manifest that other de- -ices such as the floats of drip-paus boilers and the like may be connected in any prefeiied manner to the operating rod So as to operate the same for the puipose previously described.
Vilhat lvelaim as new is:
lli' an alarm of the class described, the combination with an electric circuit and a metallic bracket arm connected iii said oi1- cuit, of vertically disposed spaced U-shaped Contact arms bodily adjustable on said biaolet arm, nuts screwed onto the arms so as to bind on opposite sides of the brackets, a piyoted circuit elosei connected in Said circuit and extending through the space between said arms and a -fluid actuated membeiconnected to said Circuit Closer for the purpose described.
ln testimony whereof l allix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. 1
