RAIL-CHAIR.

T0 all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUDWIK ZABAwA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Huugary, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs, of which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to rail chairs, and the objects of my invention are to obviale the necessity of using bolts and nuts for connecting the confronting ends of two rails, and to provide a rail chair that will form a substantial base for the abutting ends of rails and provide practically a continuous tread in connection with a rail joint.

Further objects of my invention are to provide a two-part chair that has simple and effective means for retaining the parts thereof together, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that Will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had' to the drawing, wherein z Figure l is a perspective view of a rail chair in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the same.

A rail chair in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong base plate 1 having the outer longitudinal edge thereof provided with an integral splice bar 2. The inner longitudinal ed e of the base plate l has the underneath side thereof cut away, as at 3, and the inner longitudinal edge has sets of integral screws 4 adjacent to the ends of said plate.

By cutting away the inner longitudinal edge of the base plate 1, the inner longitudinal edge is reduced and is approximately one-half the thickness of the body of the base plate. 2 and 6 can be locked inengagement with rails 11 placed upon the base plate 1.

The ends of the rails 11 are first assembled upon the base plate 1 with the splice bar 2 engaging the webs 12 of said rails and engaging under a'nd supporting the heads of said rails. The splice bar 6 can then be quickly placed in position and the nuts mounted upon the screws 4 to clamp the splice bar in engagement with the rails.

What I claim is:-

A rail chair for a pair of rails comprising the combination of a base plate of greater width than the width of the bases of the rails, positioned against the lower faces of the bases of the rails and having the outer longitudinal edge thereof provided with an integral .splice bar abutting against the heads and webs of said rails, said base plate having the inner longitudinal portion thereof reduced in thickness with respect to the outer longitudinal portion thereof, two sets of spaced screws projecting laterally from the inner longitudinal edge of said base plate adjacent to the ends thereof, a splice bar engaging the heads and webs of said rails, further overlapping the bases of the rails and engaging the inner longitudinal edge of said base plate and formed with a lateral flange extending under and abutting against the lower face of the reduced portion of said base plate, said splice bar formed with openings for the passage of said screws, the lower face of said flange in alinement with the lower face of the outer longitudinal portion of the base plate, nuts mounted upon the screws for clamping the splice bar in position, and washers interposed between said nuts and said fiange.
