JOSEPH P. WHERRY, OF EVERETT, WASHINGTON.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1911.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Serial No. 657,485.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. WHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to brushes primarily designed for painting roofs of buildings and similar structures, and is provided with an attachment that will facilitate the application of the paint.
W The accompanying drawing forming part of this specification shows a paint brush of common structure with my attachment which consists of a band or wall A of any suitable material firmly secured to the outer edge of the head B of the brush so as to form a receptacle or container for paint when carrying it from the pail to the place to be applied. The brush handle projects laterally from the head as usual in brushes of the character illustrated.
It is common in painting roofs of buildings to use a broad fiat brush and the bristle portion is dipped into the paint which is then applied to the roof. Each dip of the brush will carry only a limited amount of paint consequently the area covered in each instance is comparatively small, and to cover a large surface there is constant dipping of the brush into the paint. I have found by placing a band or wall around the outer edge of the brush head so as to form a basin or reservoir, that one dip of the brush head into the paint so as to fill said basin will carry as much paint as many dips of an ordinary brush of same width that is not provided with such an attachment.
The operation of my device is as follows: The operator rasps the handle C and dips the head B of the brush into the paint a sufficient depth to submerge the wall A and fill the cup or basin, and then distributes the contents on the roof or other surface and spreads it with the bristle portion of the brush. I
It is obvious that with a brush provided with such an attachment a given space of roofing can be painted in much less time than by the old form of brush which carries with each dip only so much paint as the bristles will retain.
Having thus described my invention, I
carrier.
JOSEPH P. WHERRY.
