i' i i H TaZl wie tia, %mai 'concerns v vii that i', EDWARD J.-KIVEL-L, a
` I county'of Middlescx and i V llissaehusetts, have invented cernduseful Improvements in Ballhd' l'gde l ereby declare'` the followful'lfelear and exact description ,m r t 'This' nventio' relates to valves for 'lush "tanksjand has for its objects to provide &means whereby the 'water in'let of the latter nay"be automatically operated from the hfloet in 'sucht manner that the owing of the water will be inaudible.
%n a eontemplates the Construction of a ,flushtank wherein the float will readily opet-'at the 'valve,` and 't-o'provide a Valve the iinlet pipe automatically, the float being 111 no way permanently connected to the valve. H -l \'ith the above 'and other objects n View,
this nvention consists in the COIlSl'llClOTlf combnation and arrangement of parts, all
as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: 4
Fi ure 1 -s a central section taken through i the ush tank, ilIustrat-ing the present in- Venti'on as appliedthereto; Fig. 2 is a central, vertical section of a valve and casng forming the subject matter of the present invent-ion; Fig. 3 is a section taken along casing` and o 'is provided with a dependent tubular mem ber or pipe, which is adapted to be closed by the ball operable within said spherical casin An auxiliary casing or pipe surroun s, and is adapted to move longitu d-inally on the dependent tubular menber of the spherical casing, and is adapted to be retained in various positions thereon, said casing being of such constructon that'the lower terminal the'reof is located. adjacent .to the bottom of the flush tank.` This constructon of the inner tubular member and outer tubular casing deadens the noise of Speeficaten ef Letters Patents.

thewater fiowing from the spherical casinq heretofore reterred to, to the flash taul. The valve Operating meehanism connected With the fioat is mounted in the casing for rasing the ball when it is desired to till the fiush tank With Water, as will hereinafter be more'fully described.
the drawings, lO indicates a fiush tanket any suitable Construction having; the "water inlet pipe 11 coperating therewith, :it the top of said iiush tenka A spherieal ''if fe casing 12 is detacl'abiy Secured to the pipe 11, through. the instrumentality 'ot the threaded projection 13 'of thesaid (using, said spherical casingbeing provided with An outlet pipe 15 is oppositely disposed' to the inlet opening 16, which is surrounded by the threaded projection 13, and is adapted to be closed by the ball valve lat. A sleeve 17 surrounds and is mounted for recip rooation upon the outlet pipe 15, `and is adapted to retainthe various positions thereon by the screw 18 threaded into the sleeve, and hearing against the out-let pipe 15. From this Construction it will readily be seen that as the water fiows through the casing 12 and the pipe 15, to the fiush tank 10, the sleeve 17, the lower terminal of which is located adjacent to the bottom of the flush tank, will deaden the noise of the water fiowing from the pipe 15.
In order to provide a means whereby the ball valve 14 may be raised to permit the water to flow through the pipe 15, an arm 19 is mounted in the pipe 15 adjaeent to the connection between said pipe and the casing 12. This arm projects into the pipe 15 and is provided with a semi-circular upwardly extending enlargement 20, which is 'adapted to bear against the ball. By the provisions of this semi-circula-r enlargemnt 20, it is possible for the arm 19 to readily engage the ball uponthe upward movement of the said arm, which will force the ball upwardly into the casing 12. A transverse rod 21 operates in the slot-s 22 of the sleeve 17, and passes through the arm 19 and the pipe 15, thereby pivotally securing the cured to the arm, and projects beyond the sleeve 17 at the terminals thereof, said projectng terminals having rgdly Secured thereto the U-shaped act-uating member 23,
Reference being had more particularly to the ball valve 14: loosely 'mounted therein.;
arm to the said pipe. This rod is rigiclly seso' i terminal 20 'of the arin 19 to raise the ball va-lve 14, thus pernitting the Waiter to flow from the inlet pipe 11 through the casing 12, the pipe 15, and into the tznl: 10. As the water enters the tenk 10, the fioat will grudnnlly he raised as the level of the water in the tenk increases, thereby pernitting the mlve 14: to gradnally drop by grzvity and close the opening between the pipe 15 and the casing 19.
It will clearly be understood that the present invention'nay be nttached to fiush tznhs of various sizes, and nt the sune time be provided with the sound-dendening sleeve 17, which may be adjusted upon the pipo 15 through the instrumentality 'of the slots 22 and the screw 18.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim :s new, and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is: V
1. The conbintion with a fiush tenk, of an inlet pipe coperating therewith, of a valve casing Secured to said inlet pipe, {L dependent outlet pipe Secured to said valve casing, a ball 'valve Operating within said valve casing, an arm pivoted to said ontlet pipe adjacent to said valve casing, a semicircular hearing projection forned on said 'ejrn adaptcd to engzge said bnll Yalve, a seni-crculnr nctuating member Secured to said arni, a flont Secured to snid nctuating member, an auxiliary pipe mounted for reciprocation on said outlet pipe and having Slots theren 'or the reception of the pivot of said arm and means for retaining said auxiliary pipe in a fixed position.
2. The conbination with :i fiush tnnk, ot' :n inlet pipe coperating therewith, a vulve casing connected thereto, a gravitybnll valve nounted in said Valve casing, a depedent outlet pipe connected to said ca'sing, a shaft nounted in said outlet pipe, an arm rigidly nounted on said shaft provided with a seniicrcular projection at its inner terminal to provide a hearing surface 'cr said ball valve, a seni-circular actnting nenber keyed to said shaft, a rod secured to said actuating nenber, a. float cnrried by the outer end of said rod, a nnller pipe mounted for reciprocation upon said outlet pipe, having slots forn'ed therein for the reception of the terninnls of said shaft, and a set screw adapted to retain said nnfller pipe in a fixed position.
In testimony whereof I `afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
