To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. RooNEY, subject of Canada, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer-Slides, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to drawerslides and aims primarily to provide a slide which will be so constructed as to permit of the drawer being readily slid inwardly or outwardly without likelihood of binding.
A furiher aim of the invention is to so construct the slide that the drawer will be held horizontal regardless of the extent to which it is withdrawn from the cabinet or other support in which it is mounted.
A further aim of the invention is to so construct the slide that it will not be liable to become disarranged and may be readily applied to any ordinary drawer and its suport.
For a full understanding of the invent-ion reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a drawer equipped with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the drawer and its support. Fig. 3

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In the drawing, the reference character A represents a cabinet or like support in which is mounted the drawer B, one side wall of the drawer B being indicated by the reference character 6 The slide embodying the present invention consists of a pair of channeled rails C, one of which isset into the inner faceof the side wall of the cabinet A and is flush with the said face. The other rail is set into the outer face of the side 12 of the drawer B and both rails are held in place by means of screws 0 and the side 6 of the drawer is formed, at the inner end of the rail C which is secured thereto, with an opening A, for the purpose of which will be presently explained.
It will be observed that the two rails are so positioned that their channels are in direct oppos1t1on, although the rails are slightly spaced. It will also be observed that when the drawer B is slid out, the opening A will register with the channel of the rail C which is secured to the wall of the cabinet A.
Near its rear end, the rail G which is secured to the side of the drawer B is formed with spaced openings 0 and a ball retainer D, of U-form, has its arms received through the opening 0 and projecting at their ends into the channel of said rail. It will be observed that one arm of the retainer is formed with a lug d which snaps through the opening a through which the said arm is driven and this lug prevents accidental withdrawal of the retainer from the openings in the rail. The wall of the drawer is formed with a slot through which the retainer may be in- ,serted when applying it to the rail. A similar retainer, also indicated by the referenceletter D. has its arms secured through open- 1ng in the rail C upon the wall of the cabinet A, this latter retainer being located at the forward end of its respective rail. A hearing ball E is confined between the projecting ends of the arms of each retainer and these balls serve to slightly spacethe two rails and thus prevent the sides of the drawer coming in contact with the sides of -the cabinet when, the draweris slid in and out. Also, these balls, fitting snugly within the channels of the two rails, serve to hold the drawer horizontal regardless of the degree to which it is withdrawn from the cabinet A. A stop a in the nature of a rest is arranged in the-channel of the rail C which is secured to the side wall of the cabinet A and the ball E which is confined by the retainer upon the wall of the drawer is designed to engage against this stop when the drawer is withdrawn to a predetermined extent, whereby to prevent 1ts complete withdrawal.
In assembling a slide with the drawer the rails C are first secured in place and-the retainer D is assembled with that one of the rails which is carried by the side of the cabinet. The drawer B is then slid outwardly until the opening A comes opposite the said retainer and the ball E which is confined by this retainer is inserted into place between said opening A. The drawer is then slid inwardly until the openingA has passed the stop 0 whereupon the other bearing ball is fitted into place in the channels of the two rails through the opening A, and the retainer for the said ball is inserted into place through the slot in the wall of the drawer whereupon the parts will be in position to perform their functions. The drawer pulls are indicated by the reference character 5.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that each of the retainers D may serve to confine two or more bearing balls if found expedient, this construction being in fact preferred where the drawer is exceptionally heavy or large. It will alsobe understood from the" foregoing that the balls serve to space the walls of the cabinet and drawer as to prevent them from coming in contact when the drawer is'slid in and out and that the drawer is at all times held horizontal even though it may be withdrawn until the stop 0 is engaged by that ball which is retained by the channel of the rail upon the wall of the drawer.
Having thus described the invention what neled rail secured to the wall of the support a channeled rail secured to the side of the drawer, the channels of the two rails being in opposition, a ball-retainer arranged at the forward end of the rail upon the support, a ball confined by the retainer, a ballretainer arranged at the rear end of the rail upon the drawer, and a ball confined by the last mentioned retainer, the last mentioned retainer being removable through the side of the drawer whereby to release the ball confined thereby, and the said side of the drawer being formed with an openingarranged to register with the ball retainer at the forward end of the rail upon the support, subsequent to removal of the retainer upon the rail u on the drawer, when the drawer is slid orwardly, whereby to permit of the removal of the ball from the retainer upon the rail upon the support.
