TOBACCO-PIPE.
Application led April 21. 1910, Serial No.
To all 'whom it may concern:
lle it. known that l, Oscar: Kinssio, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the :followingr is a specification.
One of nity objects is to provide improvements in tobaccopipes to the end ot' preventing saliva from entering the bowl, and etfeetively trapping the. nicotin and slugs 'lor preventing them from being drawn through the mouth-piece; and another object is .to provide a construction o't pipe which may be. readily cleansed.
Referring to the accolnpalrving drawing-li`igure 1' shows my improved pipe by a view in longitudinal vertical sectional elevation; Fig. 2 is a view like, Fig. 1, with the inouth-pim'e and other removable, internal, parts omitted; Fig. 3 is a plan view ot' a removable and replaceable rod ,interposed between the bowl and mouth-piece of the pipe for trapping slugs and nicotin; Fig. hlis a view in elevation ot' a nipple which coperates with the. mouth-.piece for trapping the saliva; Fie. 5 is a section taken at the line 5 on Fig. 1 and`viewed in the direction ot' the arrow; and Fitalia section taken at the line (l on Fig'. 1 and viewed in the direction ot' the arrow.
The bowl of the pipe represented at 7 is formed integrally with a stein section 8 which contains a longitudinally-extending bore t) opening into the bowl as represented in Fig. 1 and provided with a lining 10 of noi1-al')solbent material, such as metal, the lining preferably being in the, forni oi' a cylindrical tube which snugly tits the bore 9. Located in the lined-bore J is a rod 11, ircferably ot' metal, and of general cylin( rieal shape, grooved between its ends at its top and bottom, as indicatedat 12 and 13 respectively, and rated as indicated at 15, and connecting together the cylindrical shaped end-portions 16 and 17 of the rod. 'lhe c'tl'eet o1' grooving the rod, as described, is that of aiord'- ine between the walls of the grooves and the edpicent surfaces of the lining` l() upper and lower conduits 18 and 19, respectively, which are separated by the perforated web 14, which thus forms a partition, and communieate with each other through the perforations 15, vthe lower conduit19 opening Specification of Letters Iatent.`

into'a passage 20 in the end 16 of the rod communicating with the interior of the bowl. The end 17 of the rod contains a longroove 21 which opens into the conduit 18 and into a centrally-disposed passage 22 in a nipple 23 fitting into the shouldered end of the stein 8 and screwing upon the "end 17 of the rod 11. The nipple is evternallythreaded at its outer end as indicated at 24, for connection with the internally screw-threaded end of a month-niece 25. the smoke-passage 26 theren in being ot' relatively large diameter and formed with a pocket 27 for the purpose hereinafter explained. The nipple 23 terminales, bevond the point at which it is secured upon the. mouth-piece, in a cone.
shaped extension 28r which is spaced from the bottoni of the pocket 27 as illustrated in Fig; 1 and' through which the smoke is drawn into the mouth-piece. i
When the pipe is in use the smoke passes -from the bowl 7 through the passage 20, into the conduit 1S), thence upward through the perforations 15 into the conduit 18, from which latter conduit. itis drawn out of the mouth-piece through the passages 21 and 22. rlhe perforated partition l5 permits of the 't'ree passage ot' the smoke from the conduit ll) lo the conduit 1S, butI operates as a barrier for preventing passage into the conduit '1h' of slugs or nicotin drawn into the oonduit ' 19, the nicotin and slugs thus depositinfnY on the walls ofthe conduit 19. Thus when :ureunudations in` the pipe render cleaning thereof desirable, such cleaning may be etl'ectcd by withdrawing the rod 11 from the lined-bore t), the inner end walls ot' the grooves 12 and 13 lserving to scrape' troni the lining l() accumulations thereon 0I slugs and nicotin. The rod may then be cleaned in any desirable manner.
By constrnctingthe nipple 23 and mouthpiece 27 as described, saliva entering the bore 26 in the mouth-piece will ow into the oc-ket 2T and be trapped therein against its entry into the passage 22 in the nipple and thus the objectionable ,accumulation o saliva in the smoke-passages and the bowl is If desired the passage through the nipple'- material is 1 i 'l with absorbent material, such l rofl in the bore of said Siem eoumiuing lon- 1 umili-piece, whereby any reuiorio. oocl moisture ui lhe smoke se iliusraied :incl described my o :os embodied iii :i pipe, I do not ndersloofl :is inieuflin to limit r i ihis connection, as 1i'y may be d, or used io advantage in cigaroud he like articles. claim as new and desire to secure u Patent ispe comprising bowl, a` stem conhe bowl :uid provided with a e removable and replaceable the bore said Siem remaining iuiimiliyexenrliiig grooves, with he ru-tion of the rod Separating said grooves perf'iueei'h Suid grooves forming with the woll of seid bore longiiudiiially-extending liereiii, one :incl of said .rody conii'ig :i passage Connecting with the inl u' of lie bowl f uul with one of said oonui'e, anni lle opposite end of Said rod Conconnecting with the other conduits and with said mouth-piece, purpose setl forth.
