Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Application filed December 7, 1911. Serial NO. 664,490.
TO all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARvEY H. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residin'g at. Rochester, in the county of Olmstead and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of wnich the following is a Specification.
This invention relatesto fence posts, and has for its object to provide an improved post Which shall be simple and substantial in construction, Which shall be fire proof and non-decaying, and Which shall possess a high degree of non-fragility.
A further object is to provide improved means for retaining the fence Wires against the post and to permt the fence Wires to move longitudinally, and to permit the fence wires to be readily freed from the postand connected thereto.
To the above ends especially, there has been provided the novel combination and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Wherein similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a. post constructed in accordance With the present invcntion. Fig. 2 is an enlarged ragmental section of the post taken longitudinally through the center thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the draWings, 5 (lcsignatcs a metallic shcll or tubular member formed of sheet metal of suitable gage, and having the peripheral corrugations 6 throughout the length thereof, and a filling 13 of Concrete or other solidified matter having the central sinuous reinforcing wire 7 embedded therein. This Shell 5 having the p .=ripheral corrugations, Or transverse corrugations, together With. the Concrete filling W). forms a. substantial post, Which Will not become traetured or broken under Ordinary conditions to which it issusceptible,
and in use, Will not decay or become affected by frost or fire.
The corrugations 6 are provided with alining apertures 1'2 and alining tubular members 10 are passed through the respective apertures of the corrugations to be secured to the Corrugations. These tubular members 10 are secured to the corrugations by flattening the outer ends thereof to form 'flanges 11 engaging the outer sides of the Corrugatons. These tubular members 1'0 are secured to the corrugations prior to the filling being poured int the shell 5 and thus become firmly embedded in the Cement, thus forming alining passages through the various corrugations. A keeper rod 8 is adapted to be inserted through the Various corrugations by passing same through the alining tubular members 10, the upper or outer end of the said rod having an eyo 9 for Convenience in inserting and removing same.
In use, the post is erected in the ordinary manner by inserting the lower end thereof into the post hole, and by pounding the earth around the lower end of the post, the same s firmly held in position. The various corrugations are adapted to receive the fence Wires, and then by inserting the keeper 8 through the corrugations the fence Wires are retained in position in the corrugations and are also permitted to move longitudinally for the purpose of Stretching the fence. Thus it Will be seen after the fence pires have been inserted into the various corrugations, the keeper may be readily inserted through the corrugations' to retain the fence Wires in position, and the fence Wires may be freed at any time by removing the keeper.
This invention may not Only be applied to fence posts, but Will also be found of ad-- Vantage for constructing telephone and telegraph poles, and the like.
This invention provides a desirable post of this character, and attains the objects' sought in an efiicient manner, it being understood that the details are susceptible Of hers secnred in the corrugations, a soldified filling in the Shell, and :L keeper rod insertible through the tubulur members.
