useful Improvements in Hospital-Bed Appliances'; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form apart ofthis application.

This invention relates to improvements'in proveme nts in commode supports for such invalid beds, the object of the invention being to produce an apparatus whereby the patient confined to the bed may be enabled to use the commode without the necessity of being raised or lowered or lifted from the bed.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective On the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed showing my improved apparatus installed thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofythe apparatus detached from the bed, showing a portion of the bed mattress in position to show how the same operates with relation thereto. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a de-, tached portion of the apparatus. Fig.4 is a top plan view of a supporting member and guide. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a supporting member and guide showing the method of attaching the same to the bed.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bed, 2 the angle irons forming the sides thereof and 3 the mattress thereon.

In applying my improved structure I provide a circular disk 4 having a slot 5 in its edgeat any desired point.v Said disk i'has a projecting arm 6 which projects over the top edge of one of the angle irons 2' and then projects at right angles along the side of saidangle iron and is provided with a curved cross frame '1 at its lower end having, a slot 8 and depending recesses 9 and 9 one at each end thereof.

In the vertical portion of the'member 6 is a slot 10 through which projects a clamp 11 securing said member 6 and its connected parts to the angle iron'2', such clamp 11 being fixed in position by means of a screw 12 or other securing means.

Projecting through the disk '4: is a pin 13 mounted on which is a small cylinder 14 provided with two pairs of projecting bifurcated members 15 and 16 disposed at substantially right angles with respect to each other or in any othei" desired position. Hinged in the members 15 are a pair of projecting arms 17 carrying in their outer ends a bracket 18 hinged to said arms 17, which bracket supports a disk or other platform 19. on which is secured a cushion 20 similar to the mattress of the'bed on the top of which is secured a rubber member 21, such member. 21 be'ingof aslightly greater diameter than the cushion 20.' In practice the mattress 3 is provided with a hole 22 through which the cushion 20- normally projects; .By reason of the fact that the rubber member 21 is of a greater width than the cushion 20, it fills-the intervening crack between the cushion 20 and 3' to prevent the patient from taking cold or otherwise be bothered by any draft which might come between the said members.

Hinged in the member 16 is a pair of projecting arms 23 similar to the arms 17, while the member 24 designates a supporting frame hinged in the outer ends of said arms 23 and supporting a platform 25 having spring clip members 26 adapted to receive a commode 27. The upper one of the arms 17 and 23'is each provided with a projecting finger member 28 and 29 respectively, which finger members are adapted to engage the recess 5 in a manner as will appear and when not engaging said recess such members are adapted to engage the outer periphery of the disk 4. v

Secured 'to the underside of the cylindrical member 14 is a disk having two projecting band springs 31 and 32 adapted to bear against the lower one of the members 17 and 23 respectively to hold the said mem-.

In practice the recess 5 projects in substantial alinement with the hole 22 and the finger member 28 normally projects into the recess 5, thereby permitting1 the spring 31 to hold the members 17 in tion which holds the members 20 and 21 in position to cover the hole 22. When in this position the handle 33 rests vin the recess 9 which leaves the arms 34 and 35 free from engagement with the members 17 and 23. The member 29 is in this position impinged against the periphery of the disk 4 which holds the members 23 and incidentally the member 27 in an inclined position under the bed. Now when it is desired to place the commode in position for use by the patient, the handle 33 is raised out of the recess 9 into the slot 8 and'this causes the arm 34 to bear against one of the members 17' and pulls the finger member 28 out of the recess 5. Then the handle member 33. is moved through the slot 8 to the recess 9. This latter operation as will be seen turns the cylindrical member 14 to move the members 17 and connected parts away from beneath the hole 22 and moves the members 23 in such position that the member 29 is in alinement with the recess 5 and the member 25 in aline'ment with the hole 22. Then when the handle member 33 is disposed in the recess 9*, this releases the arm 35 from engagement with one of the members 23 and then the spring 32 forces said members into horizontal position, the member 29 moving into the recess 5 and the member 27 mov ing into the hole 22 when it is ready for the patient. Then when the patient is through with using the member 27 the above operation is reversed, the parts taking the normal position as shown in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I haveproduced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of theinvention as set forth herein.

While this"specification sets forth indetail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as orizontal posido not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my'invention what I claim asnew and useful and desire to se care by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a bed having a mattress provided with a hole, of a disk secured to the frameof the bed, a member turnably mounted on said disk, a pair of arms carried bysaid turnable'member, one of said arms being provided with a normal closure for said hole, the other of said arms carrying a commode, and means mounted on said turnable member and adapted to operate said turnable member and said arms to movesaid closure out of said hole and said commode into said hole and vice versa, as described.

2. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a bed having a mattress provided with a hole, a member turnably mounted on sand bed, a pair of spring pressed arms mounted on said turnable member, a pair of'arms pivoted on said turnable member and adapted to engage said spring pressed arm, an operating handle on said second named arms, one of said spring pressed arms being provided with a normal closure for said hole, and. the other of said spring pressed arms carrying a commode, as described.

A device -of the character described comprising the combination with a bed having a mattress provided with a hole, a disk mounted on said bed and provided with a recess in its edge, a projecting vertical member on said disk, a cross member on said last named member, said cross member being provided with a horizontal slot and a recess at each end communicating with said horizontal slot, a turnable member on said disk, two pairs of spring pressed arms on said turnablemember, each pair of said arms being provided with a projecting finger' member 4 adapted to impinge against the outer periphery of said disk, one pair of said sprin pressed arms carrying a normal closure or said hole, the other of said spring pressed arms carrying a commode, a handle member projecting through the slot on said cross member a pair of arms on said handle member pivoted to said turnable member, each of said last named arms being adapted to engage one of said spring pressed arms, as described.
