To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLAND R. WILD- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of York, county of York, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminated License-Numbers and Signals for Vehicles, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus, Fig; 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig; 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of numbers and signal-lights, as more fully hereinafter set forth. v In the drawing 0: designates a box preferably made of sheet metal and having its front open, the upper and lower edges of the open front being bent to form channel wave 1) extending the full length of thebox. Slidably mounted in the ways b is a slide frame consisting of a vertical plate 0 having crimpe-d or otherwise attached to its upper and lower edges flanges (Z which are bent toward each other to form ways or channels for glass plates 0 and e.
The plate 0 is provided at intervals with windows f, and above and below each window is a slot 9. A series ofnumber plates h are confined bet-ween the glass plate e and the frameiplate 0, one of these plates being used to cover. or close each one of the windows f and each being provided with an opening having ,the shape of a number. ,The upper and lower edges of these plates are bent outwardly to form flanges 2' which are adapted to fit in the slots 9 and thus removably hold the number plates in position over the windows. At one end of the num- ,ber carrying frame a plate hf is employed which plate instead of having a number stenciled in it is provided with a suitable opening coincident with the adjacent window. At the back of this plate It the glass plate 6 is located. The plate 0' is preferably red so as to provide a signal light at that end of, the apparatus. The glass plate 6 is milk white so that in the day time the numbers will show white while in the night time the numbersas well as the signal glass may be illuminated by any suitable appliance placed in the box a.
A suitable clamp or other device j may be employed to attach the apparatus to a vehicle. The slide frame carrying the numbers etc. is adapted to be slid into the box channels b from one end of the box, and the end wall of the box at the end opposite the re ceiving end is extended outwardly at is to form a stop for the sliding frame, and the tail end of the' sliding frame is bent inwardly at Z to overlap upon the adjacent end wall of the box and thus close the joint between said end wall and the sliding frame.
A suit-able spring catch or other device it may be employed to, removably lock the sliding frame in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as .new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an apparatus of the class set- .forth, the combination of a box having an open front,
the top and bottom front edges of the box being provided with longitudinal channels, a frame plate slida-ble into and out of said channels and provided with longitudinal way-forming flanges along its top and bottom edges, said frame plate being provided with a series of openings, plates supported on said frame plate lying against the inner face of said'frame plate and covering said openings, said plates being removable and being provided with sign characters, and a suitable glass supported in the ways on said frame-plate behind the sign character plates and adapted to hold the said plates in position.
