Description

W. S. ELLIOTT.
TUBE CLEANER.
APPLICATION FILED 11111. 20, 1911.
1,036,983, Patented Aug. 27, 1912.
wlmzsszs INVENTOR WILLIAM S. ELLIOTT, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
' TUBE-CLEANER.
Specification of LettersPatent. Patented Aug. 27, 1912.
Application filed January 20, 1911. Serial No. 603,?20.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. ELLIOTT, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tube-Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an end view of one form of tube cleaner embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same partly in section; Fig. 3 is a side view showing still another modification; Fig. 4 is an end view of the soft metal member of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing the form of Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 6 is a form similar to Fig. 5, and showing the soft metal member of Fig.
My invention has relation to that class of tube cleaners, wherein a cleaning tool is rotated by a motor; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, chea and compact tool of this type which is a apted for small tubes, and whlch will give a rapid and eflicient cleaning action upon the scale or other foreign matter in the tube.
A further object of my invention is to provide means of novel, simple and eflicient character for connecting the tool proper to a coupling member or carrier.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown several different em- 4 bodiments of my invention and which will now be described, thelnumeral 2 designates the cleaning tool proper, which is of tapering form having cutting or scraping wings 3. This tool is preferably of hard metal of a character to stand the work which it is required to perform.
5 designates a couplin member of softer metal and which is provi ed with a threaded shank portion 6, by means of which it can be and the tool is cast therein, thus forming a practically integral connection between the tool members, the metal of the tool member flowing into the slots 7 and recess 7.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the tool member 2 and the coupling member 5" may be cast separately, or the part 5' may be machined to a form similar to that shown. The Wings of the tool member may either be inserted in the radial slots 7 of the coupling member and the walls of said slots swaged down on to the wings to form a secure connection between the two members, or the tool member may be cast within the recess of the member 5".
It will be readily understood that the cleaning tool may be of various forms, and that while I have shown a tool having four cutting wings or blades, the invention is equally applicable to a head having any other desired number of blades. The blades may also be of any desired form, either plain or serrated.
While in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, I have shown the interior of the coupling member as having'a thread or corrugation to form a secure interlock with the metal of the tool when the latter is inserted therein, I desire it underthe wings and act as reinforces therefor. It
will be understood, however, that the wings ma be reinforced in various other ways.
claim:
1. A tube-cleaning device, comprising a tool proper having a plurality of radial blades or wings, and a cou ling member, said member having a threa ed shank projecting. in one direction, and a hollow socket portion projecting in the opposite direction, and the tool proper having an integral anchorin portion which unites the rear ends of the %lades or wings and is secured within said hollow socket portion; substantially as described.
2. A tube cleaning device comprising a tool and a coupling member, the coupling In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set melilnbler comprising a threaded soiliet, and my hand. v a 0 OW tool-engaging portion, t e latter being larger interiorly at its inner than at WILLIAM ELLIOTT 5 its outer end and having longitudinal slots Witnesses:
through which portions of the tool project, GEO. H. PARMELEE, substantially as described. H. M. CORWIN.
