To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP D. LAIBLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Clo sures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined bottle-opener and stopper, the stopper being adapted to fit over the neck of a bottle and have a body portion to be placed on the bot-- tle transversely so as to engage the bead. around the neck of the bottle, and also have a stopper portion swinging on the body portion with a plug to fit in the neck of the bottle and means adapted to co-act with the body portion to lock the swinging end of the stopper or lever. The handle or lever is formed at its end into a hook and a nose to form a bottle-opener.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of the combined stopper and opener, showing a bottle in section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the stopper shown in Fig. 1, but removed from the bottle. Fig. 3 is a top view of the closure, and Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the same with the handle thrown back and the device being in a position ready to be placed on a bottle.
The stopper is adapted for use on bottles 10 which are provided with a bead 11 at the top edge of the neck. The closure or combined stopper and opener comprises a body portion 12 which is semi-circular and preferably has two extended straight ends 13 so that the general conformation of the bodyjportion is Ll-shaped. The body portion is preferably made of sheet metal and has a lip 14, on one side, struck up from the same piece as the body portion and having an eye or eyes 15 which co-act with the eyes 16 of the lever 17 to form a hinged joint between the body portion. and the lever, the lever acting as a handle to a plug or stopper 18 which is secured to the handle in any well known manner, the handle being preferably supplied, on its top, with a button or plate 19 to cover the attaching means for the plug 18 and also act to display an advertisement. At its end the handle or lever 17 is formed into a nose 20 and a hook 21 with a recess 22 between them whereby an opener for the seals of bottles is formed.
It will be understood that the body por tion is slid onto the neck of a bottle transversely so that the two inner edges 23, see Fig. 4, of the body portion 12 engage the under side of the bead 11 as shown in Fig. l. The handle 17 is swung on its pivot so as to force the stopper 18 in the. bottle, the stopper being of resilient material, and the lever 17 is snapped between the hooks 24. of the two spring arms 25, which spring arms are bent up from the piece from which the body portion is made and on the side opposite to the one from which the lip 14 is struck up. The hooks 24 are on the end of the arms and are preferably curved outward as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 so that pressure from the lever or handle 17 will more easily force them apart. Underneath the hooks are the shoulders 26 which act to limit the downward movement of the handle 17.
The device is cheaply made and is positive as a closure, and after a bottle is opened, if all its contents are not required, the bottle can be thoroughly sealed and the contents saved from spoiling.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A bottle closure consisting of a U-shaped sheet metal body portion having a lip bent up on one end, a lever hinged on the lip and adapted to swing toward the other end of the body portion, integral arms bent up from the end of the body portion opposite the lip, the arms having a spring action and having hooks on their ends, the hooks being outwardly curved to permit their being more easily forced apart when the lever is pressed against them, the lever being adapted to extend beyond the hooks when in place, and a plug on the lever adapted to enter the neck of the bottle.
2. A bottle closure consisting of a single sheet of metal bent into a U-shape and having an integral lip bent up on one end and integral arms bent up from the other end of the body portion, the arms having a spring action and having hooks on their ends bent toward each other, the hooks also;
engagement with the arms and to be seated in locked position when pressed upon them,
and a plug on the lever, said plug being adapted to enter the neck of a bottlewhen the U-shaped piece is transversely placed 10 on the neck thereof. I
