To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT E. EWING, of Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a new and improved shade holder for light fixtures, particularly an electrolier or :1 portable electric lamp.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a shade holder of the class mentioned adapted to be mounted directly upon and coiiperate with the socketof'an electric light fixture.
Still further objects are to provide a simple and efficient construction that may be readily applied to and removed from the fixture without disturbing the socket and its connectionswith the other portions of the fixture and to reinforce and strengthen the socket per 86.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a part elevat-ional and a part sectional view of a portion of an electric light fixture showing my invention applied thereto, the section being taken on line I-I of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a top plan; Fig. 3, a part elevational and a part sectional view, the section being taken on line III-III of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the band and detachable arm of the form of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, aperspective view of a modified form of band and arm; and Figs. 6 and 7 perspective views of still further modified forms of bands.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the'upper end of the fixture stem to which the lamp-socket is secured in the usual manner. The socket illustrated is of the well known form and, as usual, comprises an upper metallic shell or portion 2, and a lower member 3, together with a switchkey 4.
The improved shade holder designed to be supported from the lamp-socket comprises, as illustrated in the form of Fig. 1, a band or encircling member 5 having a series of inner smooth contacting surfaces or bearings 6 designed to frictionally engage the upper member 2 of the lampsocket. Member 5 is also provided with a plurality of grooves or channels 7 and with a shoulder or ledge 8, which latter, when member 5 is applied to the socket, rests upon the upper edge of socket-member 3. In addition to the elements referred to, member 5 is formed with a switch-key re ceiving notch 9.
Projecting outwardly from the band 5, I provide a plurality of arms 10, with each arm formed with a member or portion 11. Portion 11 of the arms is adapted to be entered in the grooves of member 5 and held between the band and the socket. It is preferably formed with an inner curved face an adapted to fit the curved wall I) of the grooves 7 and with a flat face 0 designed to make contact with the curved surface of the upper socket-member 2. In connection with the arms 10, I have shown a shade supporting ring 12 which ring may be secured to the arms by rivets as shown at 13, Fig. 1, or the ring may be provided with straps 14 and the outer ends of the arms bent as shown at 15 and entered between the strap and ring. In some instances, it is unnecessary to employ the ring 12, for the shade, not shown, may be supported directly upon the detachable arms 10.
In the form of Fig. 5, the band 5, in addition to the grooves and other elements above described, is formed with openings 16 and the detachable arms with an extension 17 adapted to be inserted in the openings.
Figs. 6 and 7 show modified forms of bands designed to be applied to the lampsocket and employed in connection with the detachable arms. In the form of Fig. 6, I show arm engaging members 18 struck up from band 5*, these members 18 are adapted to receive the bent inner end portions of the detachable arms. Fig. 7 shows a bandmember comprising an inner member 19 and an outer member 20, the latter bein formed with grooves 21. I
What I claim is: i
1. The combination with an electric light fixture having a socket including upper and lower socket-members, of a shade holder designed to be supported. from the socket and including a band mounted on the socket and formed with alternately disposed comparatively wide contacting faces adapted to frictionally engage the upper socketmember and relatively narrow interior grooves, said band being formed with a switch key receiving notch, and a detachable projecting arm having an inner bent portion entered in a groove and held between'the band and socket.
2. The combination with an electric light fixture having a socket including upper and lower socket-members, of a shade holder designed to be supported from the socket and socket, and staring secured to the outer end of the arm. t
3. The combination withanelectric light fixture having a socket including upper and lower socket-members, of a shade holder designed to be supported from the socket and including a band mounted on the socket and formed with alternately disposed comparatively wide socket contacting faces adapted to frictionally engage the upper socketmember and relatively narrow interior grooves, and with a shoulder or ledge adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the lower socket-member, said band being formed with a switch key receiving notch, a detachable projecting'arm having an inner bent portion entered in a groove and held between the band and socket, and a ring secured to the outer end of the arm.
