Be it. known that I, CHARLES F. DoLLn, :a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the countyfof Hamilton and State of -Ohio, have invented certain nen7 and useful Improvements in ilelephone Apparatus, of which the .follovvirg is a speciiu cation.

The accompanying drawings represent the .preferred embodiment of my invention.
A represents the usual standard yof a desk telephone, to the upper end of whichV is pivotally attached a telephone transmitter E adjustable to either the. position shown in full line or to the kposition shown in dott-ed line. The mechanism supporting the receiver may be-pivotally attached directly to the base A, but I preferably provide a separate member C secured by hooks 2 or other means to the under face of the base A.. A member D is rotatably att-ached to member C and .is provided with a'collar 3 andy iv wher 4 which by means of a castellated 4nut 5 and cotter lpin Scan be adjusted to se- 'cure anyV desired 'tension of the collar@ and washer 4t upon member so ,that member D Will vnot turn too freely with reference to member C, and will remain in any position to which it may be adjusted. The projecting portion of member D is-divided into tivo tiet forks 7, which are embraced `betaveen the outer forks 8 of member E and the firmer `forks .9 -otsaid member E. The upperend of member E is also `provided with three or four longitudinal slots 13,Which.enables the internal diameter ot the .upper end of member E to be reduced to less than the diameter ot the vbody portion of member E., due -to the compressing action oit the nut 12. Member E is also provided with 4a rigidly attac-hed collar 14, which is adapted when the instrument is not in use `to engage the forked ends 15 of the switch vlever d6, Which serves to break the telephone circuit.
A tubular member H is fitted closely within the body of member E, and is adapted to telescope to any desired extent within the member and to turn or move rotatably Within said member E. The adjustment of the nut 12 permits the slotted yupper end of member E to close in upon and trictionally engage the. exterior of member H to secure the desired tension and to provide Jfor the adjustment of and retention -of member H iii-,its adjusted positions. A member K having thin spring or flexible arm 17 is telescopically fitted to the upper end of member H, and is .provided with a recess 18 for the passage of the Wires 19 .20 to be connected to the receiver, said Wires passing up through the center of members E and H. A telephone receiver L preferably of the Watch case type is preferably employed and connected to the free lend of the fiexible arm 17 by means of a screw 21 and nut 22. The flexible arm 17 provides for the receiver being held With a comparatively firm but" yielding 'tension against ythe ear of the operator Without vliability of -orcingthe several adjustable and tensioned members out of their adjusted ositions, and provides for continuously holding the receiver to the ear notwithstanding the movements of theoperator in talking or taking notes. The member H may also if desired be lifted entirely clear of member E and held by hand with the receiver to the ear if desired, the wires 19 and 20 feeding up through the member E to permit such use of the member H. The several adjustments capable of being made between the member C and the receiver permit the receiver to be placed in any desired position, and at any desired angle within reasonable range of the transmitter, and thus provides for satisfying the individual requirements of any one who may desire to use the telephone. i
In operation the member E is first moved to disengage the collar 14 and body of memher E from the forked' arms of the switch lever 16, the member D then turns relative to member C to move the receiver toward the operator, the member H being drawn ont from member E `to lengthen the receiver support, until the receiver is at. the right. distance andangle from the transmitter, to attain vwhich the member H may be turned pivotally within the member E,
'and the member E adjusted pivotally with reference to member D. The operator then presses his ear against the receiver-to put more or less tension on the flexible arm 17, which adapted to yield without disturb ing the previous adjustment of the members D. E. H. When the operator is through with the telephone the member H may be pushed back into member E or not, and the member E returned to engage the forks of the switch lever.
In the modification Fig. 3 the member `D is preferably inserted through a hole in one of the side plates ot the battery b'oX and the collar .-'l'and washer 4 clamped upon said side 'plaie Q4 to. secure the desired tension for member D. The member D also carries a projectinglr arm 525. which dependingr upon the movements of the member D "is adapted to engage and disengage the usual switch lever 16. The other members of Fig. 3 are mounted and operated as heretofore described.
